US Holds All the Cards in Showdown With Iran
Townhall.com ^ | June 20, 2019 | Victor Davis Hanson

In May 2018, the Donald Trump administration withdrew the United States from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action with Iran, popularly known as the Iran nuclear deal.

The United States then ramped up sanctions on the Iranian theocracy to try to ensure that it stopped nuclear enrichment. The Trump administration also hoped a strapped Iran would become less capable of funding terrorist operations in the Middle East and beyond, proxy wars in the Persian Gulf, and the opportune harassment of ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

The sanctions are clearly destroying an already weak Iranian economy. Iran is now suffering from negative economic growth, massive unemployment, and record inflation.

A desperate Iranian government is using surrogates to send missiles into Saudi Arabia while its forces attack ships in the Gulf of Oman.

The Iranian theocrats despise the Trump administration. They yearn for the good old days of the Obama administration when the United States agreed to a nuclear deal that all but guaranteed future Iranian nuclear proliferation, ignored Iranian terrorism, and sent hundreds of millions of dollars in shakedown payments to the Iranian regime.

Iran believed that the Obama administration saw it as a valuable Shiite counterweight to Israel and the traditionally American-allied Sunni monarchies in the Gulf region. Teheran assumes that an even more left-wing American administration would also endorse Iran-friendly policies, and so it is fishing for ways to see that happen in 2020 with a Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, or Joe Biden presidency.

We need such a counterweight? I don't think so.

Dumb photo. Rouhani may have the title of president, but he has no power in foreign affairs. All final decisions come from Khamenei.

We also thought we had all the cards in Vietnam, but the N. Vietnamese had the royal flush -— the left wing of the democratic party and an American public that was more interested in the Beatles than in winning a war.

You are right about that. So, i say make the french fight for their own pipeline. The sunnis have the welath of the world’s oil reserves to fight for themselves also.

I am opposed to a 1000 more troops committed to this..
Send them to the border... um i still have a bit of posse comitatus in me, so NG troops only.
Recuperate the cost of our drine X 10 and stay out of the rest of it.

I agree. I have been surprised at the number of neocons who show up on these threads, all eager for a war with Iran. “What about the nukes?” they say. I think that’s mostly an excuse to push the basic neocon agenda of constant war. I say “No thanks”.

Nope, not the “neocons’ fault, Iran’s fault. THEY have been at war with us since 1979. By the way, a lot of neocons are ALSO patriots who don’t like seeing our sailors on their knees. Too many toss that word around like smear-merchant Dumocrats.

Yes the democrat party. As far the American people…this war was not fought to win. Americans don’t mind fighting for their nation as long as it’s fought to win. There hasn’t been a war fought to win since WW2.

This little pisant nation should have been taken over in 30-40 days. So 10+years later, not being allowed to fight the war properly we left. When we attacked Normandy 75 years ago we fought and bombed out way into Germany to end it less than a year later. Don’t expect people to fight for a never ending war.

Never underestimate the stupidity of a whole Shiite country with a death wish. They might do anything.

People often get smeared when they endlessly push for wars that the public has no interest in fighting. They’ve earned it.

F*****g neocons fought in the ME since 9-11 without the will to fight to WIN.

Bush junior decided to finish his daddy’s war rather than get bin laden. Neocons.

Does anyone on FR believe that, if Trump starts a war with a country that has neither attacked us nor threatened any of our vital interests, Nancy Pelosi is going to back him up?

War has been never ending since WWII because the US is now expected to “clean up” afterwards a la nation-building in the 40s and 50s. We debated going into Iraq for well over a year (there was no rush as later claimed by Democrats). Do you remember “you break it, you buy it” from Powell? We don’t have problem knocking over “pissant nations”. We have trouble packing up and leaving chaos behind... just to explode 10 years later.

Hanson proposes a workable solution to the problem...we no longer need to send ground troops anywhere...we have no desire to occupy any other territory. Consecutive attacks on nuclear production facilities will do the trick, and if not, one well-placed walleye through a window in the parliament when it is in session will end the aggression.

How true, Trump is literally saving the world.
