Murphy threatens Democrats who refuse to send him the millionaires tax he wants

Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy issued his strongest threat yet Wednesday to New Jersey’s Democratic-controlled state Legislature: Without tax increases, I’m prepared to slash spending items you want.

In a letter to lawmakers, Murphy warned that if they continue with their current plan to send him a state budget that lacks his proposal to increase income taxes on the state’s millionaires, or if they don’t agree to raise any other taxes, then he’ll consider line-item vetoes on the Legislature’s $38.7 billion proposed budget.

“So let me be clear, if this budget contains the revenue for your added spending, I will work with you,” Murphy wrote a day before the Legislature is set to vote on their budget.

“But if not, I will be forced to take corrective action,” the governor continued. “Tax fairness is an issue that will not go away on June 30.”

A state budget must be enacted by that date. Otherwise, Murphy could order a state government shutdown.

The words “tax fairness” have been synonymous with Murphy’s main demand from lawmakers: A tax increase on those who earn more than $1 million a year.

Tax fairness means to look at how much taxpayer has remaining after taxes are paid.

“Without tax increases, I’m prepared to slash spending items you want.”

Careful, that might bring some sanity to governing in that state.

Jersey folks always seem to make it hard on themselves with their poor political choices for so, so long

I heard this discussed on tv yesterday.
Apparently last year the Gov. called for and got the tax on all earning over $ 5 million.
Then comes back this year lowering that to $1 million.
So, what about next year? $200k ?

I recall some yrs ago NJ passed a huge tax on the sale of trucks.
Drove the market across State line to PA.

“Jersey folks always seem to make it hard on themselves...”

Nothing in politics is direct cause and effect. It’s all nonlinear. You push in one direction and everything moves in another. You have a clear winner and then enough of his voters defect to a spoiler that a horrible candidate wins instead. This is the problem when you have two clearly conservative candidates and they split the vote, or, you have a radical Leftie and a moderate Leftie. (Are there still moderate Lefties?) A “wealth” of diversity means never having a conservative in office.

Here is a better idea: Cut expenses, salaries and fraud.

And it’s not like moving out of New Jersey is such a hard choice.

A popular saying is that friends don’t let friends move to NJ and there are plenty of folks who have left and don’t regret getting the heck out Jersey one bit.

Just like in California, as the politicians drive the productive members out of the state with their insane policies, the state loses tax base and steadily declines and becomes an even more broke sewer than it was before

To a Marxist, The State ‘owns’ everything. If The State allows you to keep a small fraction of what you earn, it’s pure generosity.

If I didn’t know any better, I’d swear Phail Murphy is a paid operative of the North Carolina Chamber of Commerce.

I have lived in NJ for close to 30 years.

When I moved into my neighborhood, half the people were retired, having worked in the Garden State all their lives.

Now, when somebody retires, they are out of NJ the next day. I don’t know a single retired person on my block.

The only people who can afford to live in NJ are the people who are making premium salaries working in NYC and for a few successful NJ companies. Everybody else leaves as soon as possible.

Pssst.....the wealthy can move.

The wealthy can and do move! And people who earn more than $1,000,000 annually often have more than 1 home. And those homes are usually in places with a different climate. And just like New Jersey, Florida is unlivable for 4 months of the year, just different months. But Florida's taxes are much, much lower than New Jersey's.

I can't believe that Murphy could have been the CEO of Goldman-Sachs and not understand this. So I have to speculate that he's running for president in 2024 and is doing this to establish his bona-fides with the Bolshevik masses. (If he's running for 2024, I'd also speculate that means he thinks it's not going to be a Democrat winning in 2020.) As they say, he has a great "face for radio", but delusion is part of most politicians' psyche, particularly Democrat politicians.

I was just in New Jersey yesterday,To describe it as a cesspool would be an insult to cesspools. It seems that millionaires in the state wouldn't need much of an incentive to bail out to states like Florida.

Maybe the governor is about to get a lesson in outside the box thinking to make him more cooperative.

".... I recall some yrs ago NJ passed a huge tax on the sale of trucks. Drove the market across State line to PA...."

And if the NJ governor's millionaires tax passes, it will drive the high dollar taxpayers out of state.

People are not static. They can move and they will.

Proof yet again that democRATS don't have clue how economies work.

democRATS do not know how to do anything but double-down on their already ineffective policies.

People are not static. They can move and they will move out of NJ if this is passed.

Maybe someone ought to point out the obvious to this democRATic Cuomo-Wannabe governor, Murphy.

High-tax state exodus is just beginning, experts warns.

"The cap on state and local tax (SALT) deductions has already begun to drive some residents away from high-tax states like New York and New Jersey, but experts say that trend is only going to intensify."
