In a major provocation, Iran shot down an unarmed and unmanned U.S. Navy MQ-4C Triton drone while it was flying in international airspace over the Strait of Hormuz Thursday, a U.S. official told ABC News.

The incident is sure to trigger serious discussions within the Trump administration about how to respond to a direct attack on a U.S. military asset that goes beyond recent attacks in the Middle East that the U.S. has blamed on Iran.

Gen. Hossein Salami, commander of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, offered a strongly worded threat to the U.S. after the drone was downed.

"Shooting down the American spy drone had a clear, decisive, firm and accurate message," he said, translated from Farsi. "The message is that the guardians of the borders of Islamic Iran will decisively respond to the violation of any stranger to this land. The only solution for the enemies is to respect the territorial integrity and national interests of Iran."

"We do not intend to engage in war with any country, but we are completely ready for the war. Today's incident is a clear sign of this accurate message," Salami added.

The Triton unmanned aircraft system completes its first flight May 22, 2013 from the Northrop Grumman manufacturing facility in Palmdale, Calif.

The U.S. Navy MQ-4C Triton was shot down by an Iranian surface to air missile while the reconnaissance drone was flying in international airspace over the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, a U.S. official told ABC News.

He was elected to build a border wall
Not get rid of mullahs. Getting into a stoush with Iran at this juncture in his presidency would be suicidal politically

There’s something that folks haven’t figured into the mix: our so-called allies in the EU.

We’ve got bigger problems than Iran.

He destroyed Yeb Bush in the GOP primaries by loudly pointing out the idiocy of the Iraq war.

Having the U.S. military serve as a mercenary force for Sunni royal families in the Middle East is hardly an ingredient of a "Make America Great Again" agenda.

And engaging in yet another stupid Middle East war -- while 100,000+ invaders from Latin America pour over our own borders every month -- is almost certainly going to doom his presidency. In fact, this very script could only have been written by a group of DNC operatives.

What exactly are these allies doing wrong here?

You mean other than aiding and abetting Iran, and conspiring with American citizens to unseat a duly-elected American president?

If these European allies wanted to unseat Trump they'd push the U.S. to invade Iran -- or am I missing something here?

"Aiding and abetting Iran" is hardly a problem here. The U.S. imposing sanctions on Iran doesn't obligate any other country to abide by them, does it? I mean -- does the U.S. shut down the border with Canada just because they've engaged in commerce with Cuba for decades?

I would bet that some of these border jumpers are Iranian operatives. If the Mullahs get bolder and we have to smack them in a surgical strike the border would have to be shut down for securities sake. Just a thought. If the Rats continue to resist border security they will lose bigly.

Assuming that we have to go to war with Iran to facilitate the removal of the Mullahs is linear thinking.

What we have to do is work with our allies (particularly with the Israelis and Saudis) to empower the Iranian people.

The toppling of the Mullahs has to come from within or we just end up with another Shah.

The members of the EU (particularly the leaders of the EU, Germany and its lackey, France) aren’t our allies except in name only.

“remember both the Deep State and Iran would want conflict. It will hurt Trump in the election which neither wants.”

This has John Kerry’s name all over it.

Not since the Kuwaiti incubator hoax, where lies were put forward that scores of babies from incubators were murdered by Iraqis, have the war plans of neocons been so obvious. It’s John Bolton & company who have placed America on this war footing with Iran. It’s shameful.

No offense, but the fact that someone here on FreeRepublic would consider a radical Islamic regime like Saudi Arabia to be an "ally" of the U.S. shows how far gone this country is.

I voted for Donald Trump because I got tired of having the U.S. military serving as mercenaries for the Saudi investment partners of the Bush family.

Trump is discovering that talk is cheap and weakness is provocative. Obama was always appeasement-minded, but the Democratic media always covered for him. That same media will criticize Trump for being weak if he backs off and slam him for being reckless if he does Praying Mantis again.

Conflict with Iran would not result in a ‘quagmire’.

There would be no shooting war on the ground; nor adequate time for shock and awe.

Don’t worry about it.
