Yep! We have to be smarter than they are. 8chan is going to pay a big price for being slightly on-the-right, or allowing discussions not dominated by SJWs and Leftists.
Better to be arrested for having done the deed than arrested for thinking of it.

Does he know that the NSA, GCHQ and their FVEY partners, as well as every other SIGNIT monitoring countries in the world already have recorded nearly everything he’s ever transmitted or done electronically?
It’s more about how that information gets introduced into a judicial system or public knowledge without causing a “civil rights” commotion.
I’d say his writings trigger filters both on the Left and the Right, and we’re all on somebody’s list somewhere in the world.

Sure: the price starts with hiring good lawyers, that gets expensive fast. You are probably going to have to comply with the subpoena, but you still need lawyers to help every step that you go.
Then, there are your users. They aren't going to be very happy about being put into a public space. The entire value prop of 8chan is based on edginess and anonymity.
So, you've killed the "anon" part, potentially, and then the edginess isn't nearly as fun. Does 8chan notify people that they have turned their identity over to the FBI, or do they let the FBI do that?
Then, maybe the FBI decides to make an example of 8chan and prosecute them for the web equivilent of having an unfenced swimming pool in the middle of a subdivision. The theory of that is that there is a highly likelyhood that eventually some kid is going to find it, fall in and drown.
If you run forums that cater to conspiracy theorists propounding ideas that seem utterly bonkers to most people, like the former First Lady is a child-eating cannibal or that John McCain was executed by the FedGov, well are you getting up to that "yelling fire in a crowded theater" exception to free speech?
Then you are probably going to have a lot of 8chan users doxxed, as their info becomes public. Which will result in more negative publicity for 8chan -- as stories appear about people losing their livelyhood for having posted on 8chan and then being outed.
A bunch of people on thread above say: this is about controlling speech. And I agree with them. To get it to work you need to make an example of them.
YouTube started the same way: taking down Alex Jones, for publishing too many conspiracy theories. By now they have pretty much trained everyone not to get too political on YouTube if you want to stay present and monetized.
I disagree with the idea that people “knew”. I think there is quite a bit of chatter about such things at places like 8chan that never comes to fruition.

I'm not an 8chan member or user. I find the interface irritating, the comments frequently obnoxious and the prevalence of porno sprinkled around on completely unrelated channels and topics weird and gross.
One of the unfortunate things is that so many FreeQs (Free Republic Q followers) spend a lot of time there and now I see that aggressive, rude and profane style of 8chan posting showing up here, more and more.
To give one example calling people "fags" as in "aren't you a weather-fag". That's mild compared to a lot of banter that goes on over there.
The whole hyper-aggressive, attack people you disagree with by calling them rude names -- that "style" has never been a big part of FR, and I'd hate to see it become even more widespread, as it is on the Q threads.
We have our own culture here at Free Republic, developed over more than two decades, and we don't need to import the chans style.
I do support the chans in this way: They have every right to free-speech, they have a right to organize themselves however they want, and they are under attack be Fed Gov now.
The idea that the Feds need to know who was on a thread anonymously when there is no indication of anyone helping the spree-killer in anyway is more Government over-reach, and an attempt to chill free speech.
So, no I won't be going over there "to help them", and I'm not claiming any special expertise to help them.
I did speculate about what the Gov is really doing, and in my opinion it's nefarious.

Your miniscule knowledge of FReeQs is quite astounding. I can count the number of FReeQs that “spend a lot of time” on the Chans on one hand and not using two of my fingers.
