SAN DIEGO A search warrant has revealed new details about the alleged gunman in an deadly attack on a synagogue in Poway.
The warrant reveals that John Earnest told others he lit part of a mosque on fire in Escondido prior to the shooting.
I scorched a mosque in Escondido with gasoline, Earnest wrote. and they never found [expletive] on me.
The website he posted that comment to is called 8ch.net, often referred to as 8chan, which serves as an open forum for users to post and comment about issues with anonymity. The search warrant alleges that Earnest posted this just before carrying out the shooting in Poway: "It's been real dudes. From the bottom of my heart thank you for everything I've only been lurking for a year and a half, yet, what I've learned here is priceless. It's been an honor. Livestream link is below as well as my open letter. Livestream will begin shortly. "
The FBI is ow looking into people who conversed with Earnest on the forum. Investigators plan to track back IP addresses to see whether those people had prior knowledge of Earnests plans and whether they could have alerted authorities ahead of time.
Additionally, the search warrant revealed that Earnest planned to live stream his attack on social media. He also allegedly planned to accompany the attack with a musical playlist.
Good.
Good. If they knew his plans and did not report it, they are accessories to his crime.
There could have been 10,000 people who TECHNICALLY "knew" but weren't concerned in the slightest, as they excused away the threats as being just more of the disjointed, confused jabbering that goes on, over there, even right now.
FR is a paragon of syntax and good manners, compared to the chans, yet what if the authorities acted in every case something kooky was said here..?
Just saying and not trying to offend anyone. Hyperbolic comments here on FR can be used against you. I understand people want to blow off steam against bad people in the news. But add a hyperbolic statement (out of context of course) to something from an ex, co-worker or an angry neighbor that calls a snitch agency and you can have a problem.
Very sad. Now I know how they felt in the Soviet Union.
Just wow.
Exactly!
Does 8chan log IP addresses? They are under absolutely no obligation to do so.
Agreed. I’ve read countless posts on FreeRepublic from decent people advocating harm. Nobody meant it. Guess I’m guilty for not reporting it to the FBI.
Maybe, maybe not. Anonymous message boards enjoy first amendment protection as anyone here knows, and the burden of proof is and should be a high barrier when it comes to guilt by association.
As for 8ch, the owner lives in the Phillipines and unless it is a DMCA violation that could result in huge fines, he pretty much doesn’t censor what gets posted.
There is presently an outcry for making Facebook, Twitter, etc a true open neutral platform like they claim to be but aren’t. 8ch proves that the adage “be careful what you ask for” applies.
Am I going to be in trouble for expressing my desire to urinate on Ted Kennedy and John McCain’s grave?
If questioned by authorities about this, anyone would be a fool not to assert their 5th amendment right to remain silent. They are searching for sacrificial lambs to be scapegoated over this.
that won’t stand up to scrutiny - if every incident of someone shooting their mouths off playing fantasy pretend on the Internet were reported, there would be far too many reports to handle
besides, as we saw in Parkland, reporting these things doesn’t actually help, why should anyone be compelled to waste their time on routine random internet nonsense?
Good luck with that.
When they came for wrong speech 8chan discussion forums, I said nothing..
Don't Talk to Cops Part 2, in which a police office agrees with the law professor on all particulars.
This new effort is NOT about a Synogogue shooting, or a Mosque shooting. It’s not even about a Church shooting.
The aim of this is really something else completely:
Clamping down on dangerous ideas, re-establishing control of info channels.
Our rulers dislike the idea of people gaining access to certain ideas, and of citizens getting in touch with large number of other citizens amidst a common-market of free ideas.
America and Western Civ writ large needs to be destroyed and information formums provide glue connecting people to other people in an unrelgulated manner impede that aim.
So our rulers intend for that to go away.
Also the chans had a lot of influence on the 2016 election. Of course they need to neutralized for 2020. I don’t see how anyone can call this good.
The long term goal of the FBI and Democrats is to criminalize any internet sites outside the control of the Democrats.
