Launching his bid for the Tory leadership this week, Brexit Britain has been wallowing in a hyped-up psychodrama of national humiliation.
..A random sample of headlines from across the spectrum tells the story: Brexit and the prospect of national humiliation;Voice of the Mirror: Theresa Mays Brexit is a national humiliation;Humiliating to have to beg for EU exit, says Arlene Foster And so, endlessly, on.
There is something hysterical in this constant evocation of humiliation. It is a cry of outraged self-regard: how dare they treat us like this?
Yes, of course, the Brexit debacle has reduced Britains prestige around the world..but Britain has not been humiliated by the EU the deal was shaped by Mays (and Arlene Fosters) red lines. Britain..did get what it actually asked for. Thats not humiliation.
...There is, of course, a long British tradition of phoney affront. When Britain was an aggressive imperial power, it was always on the lookout for intolerable slights to the national honour think of the War of Jenkins Ear in the 18th century, when an assault on an English smuggler was the excuse for war with Spain. Perhaps when you are truly powerful, there is even a certain pleasure in imagining the opposite.
..But a feeling that provided relief from the overwhelming greatness of empire becomes ridiculous when you are no longer a great power. It becomes a mere posture. This is what happened to the idea of national humiliation in the Brexit mentality. At its heart, Brexit depends on the idea that Britain cannot be an ordinary European country and, therefore, that equality within the EU is inherently humiliating.
Britain is humiliated by the EU because it expects to be superior.

When there is manufactured "national humiliation" then you end up with situations like China's "century of humiliation" justifying their 9-dash line, or Germany's Versailles treaty "humiliation" etc. etc.
Fakenews by a fake intellect.
Yes, Mr. Fintan O’Foole is the No. 1 leftard at the Grauniad.
Well it’s not news but opinion. The facts arr that the theme of newspapers is of “national humiliation”
Let’s see, n0Ob. You joined in 2012 and I joined in 2001. I would suggest that it’s far more likely you are a troll.
Secondly, you haven’t been yo the UK. There is a strain of superiority complex among many leading leave politicians and newspapers.
Thirdly, the EU is anti globalist. It is in fact the antithesis of globalism as it advocates a closed club of nations and puts barriers on non club members from trading (you know that the leavers want the EU to give the UK the same benefits and that the UK was the one advocating the push east.
the thing is that the UK had a large nimber of opt outs.
I despise your pal George Soros. If you want to stick with him, continue doing so
>> nothing ever has come from the communist The Guardian.
Don’t recall ever reading a Guardian article that didn’t have a spell of the Leftwing agenda.
>> the EU is anti globalist.
Is this a recent trend? Along with condemning US tariffs, its immigration recklessness tells a different story.
Its no fun being humiliated, but you can get through it with a stiff upper lip.
the EU is anti globalist.

it's hard to make any kind of sense of cronos v1.0
hopefully soros will upgrade its software to make it worth engaging, but I doubt it. I think cronos has been deprecated.
You follow Pelosi and Soros? And want to preach. Really strange, n0ob.
“insulating people from government” is your personal definition of globalisation. So that means you claim every form of government bar anarchy is globalization???
Wow. Globalization is defined by Webster as
“the development of an increasingly integrated global economy marked especially by free trade, free flow of capital, and the tapping of cheaper foreign labor markets”
The EU ia against integration outside the club. Cheaper foreign labour geta short shrift in the EU. It’s all about a closed club. Ergo the very opposite of globalization.
Even if you look at your personal definition, shared by no one else, the recent parliament elections when Farage and co won 29 out of 73 seats is the opposite of insulation too. Perhaps you need to come up with another personal definition, shared by no one else again?
US tariffs protect American business both from the Chinese as well as from European manufacturers. The EU is hypocritical on that point to preach.
What President Trump is doing with tariffs is good for the USA and is no different to EU tariffs on imports from non EU countries.
You don’t like people insulting George Soros? Tough luck noob
Since you agree with George Soros policies, perhaps you could complain to him that we on FR don’t like him.
