Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC) announced on Thursday that they will introduce legislation in the House and Senate that would forgive up to $50,000 of each students college loan debt, which would help about 42 million people, according to a press release posted on Warrens Senate website.
The legislation will significantly lessen the student debt crisis and help tackle the racial wealth gap, the headline of the press release announcing the bills said.
Warren, a member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions and Clyburn, House Majority Whip, both claim that the bill, if it becomes law, will help about 95 percent of student borrowers and cancel debt entirely for some 75 percent of borrowers.
The student debt crisis is real and its crushing millions of people especially people of color, Warren said in the announcement. Its time to decide: Are we going to be a country that only helps the rich and powerful get richer and more powerful, or are we going to be a country that invests in its future?

The idea of bums and deadbeats getting a free ride like that irks me bigly.
Any person who paid their loans off should be angry too.
Well the government has no motivation to balance their budget. They just print money when they need it.
Balance budget amendment? Forget it. You can’t even get the GOP on board with that. BOTH parties just keep increasing the national debt.
And it’s not going to get any better in the future because we have growing population that seems to be on the cusp of demanding socialism. It’s going to get worse. But that’s what the voters want....
I have a student loan that i still pay on. I borrowed a whopping $1,700. The school took 350 of it. I’ve paid thousands and thousands on that loan. Every time I get the balance within a year of being paid off, they sell the debt and I end up owing thousands more. I can’t get it paid off.
I’ve more than paid off the principle plus more interest than the loan was for so student loan debt forgiveness...they should be asking MY forgiveness for their horrible games.
Would they buy my vote? Nope. They should have come to me years ago saying “you’ve paid more than you should have. We won’t charge you any more.”
The only reason there are “billions” of unpaid student debt is because of the unreasonable interest practices, collection practices, and book keeping practices.
It’s all smoke and mirrors.
* Punish student’s who *did* pay down their own student loans
* Punish the taxpayers
* Reward spendthrift students who can’t manage debt
F’ you Warren.
Im an old buzzard who helped a daughter through school. Will she reimburse me?
I paid off my student loan years ago.
Do I get a refund? I suppose if I would have just refused to pay it, with this bill, I could I could have had it written off.
Gubmint always panders to the slackers.
I am glad I paid them off.
But with stagnant wages and increasing college debt, something was going to snap. $500K for an engineering degree that pays starting $60K is like having a house payment while living in a one bedroom B&B
Where in the world and what in the world did you study that cost you $500,000 for an Engineering degree???
I’d really be interested in a reply...
Why reward the same corrupt institutions that are exploiting students as we speak? We need accreditation reform NOW.
These are two of the most stupid, vile and disgusting people in American politics.
Seriously, if Trump offered to give $50,000 per person for some such thing, would that have even been legal?
Do those of us who paid off our kids education debt get reparations?
Education debt reparations! I like the sound of that...
Especially since I PAID FOR THREE COLLEGE EDUCATIONS...(not counting my own...)
These are two of the most stupid, vile and disgusting people in American politics.
For anyone who paid off their student loans, they should get a refund, pure and simple.
Yup, we need mortgage reparations!!
How are the people who have paid their loans compensated?
Everyone who made a bad investment also should get a kickback from the government.. Who made the bad investment should not determine the eligbility.
What engineering degree costs 500,000.00 dollars?
What engineering degree from a worthwhile college/university pays so little? (60K for an engineer is very, very low!)
The same as the grads of that college where the commencement speaker paid off student debts. No debt? No pay.
Im about 250000 in the hole I want it back or Ill take it out of your a##
Never mind the political motive of the bill. It is simply unfair. How in hell is this bill fair and just.
It is a shitty proposal by shitty people to gain votes, yes, but it is unmanageable and a dirty trick on the taxpayers.
SHEESH!
