(Reuters) - Michael Avenatti, the lawyer who represented porn star Stormy Daniels in lawsuits against U.S. President Donald Trump, has been sued by a paraplegic client who accused him of siphoning away a $4 million settlement he had won.
Geoffrey Johnson is seeking at least $9.5 million of compensatory damages, plus punitive damages, from Avenatti and several other defendants in his complaint filed with the Orange County Superior Court in California. His law firm is expected to discuss the case at a press conference on Thursday.

I’ve read the Federal complaint and it looks like this is a solid civil case. Given the amount CPL probably stole from this poor guy, the requested compensatory damages look reasonable and there ought to be lots of highly justifiable punitive damages. Smart move only filing the suit after CPL got indicted for the same thing.

Would a Democrat Presidential candidate stealing from a stripper and a paraplegic hurt his campaign or help it?

It would have no negative affect on him or her. Hitler could run against Trump and the Dems would cheer for Hitler.

Might be a solid case but if the poor guy’s paying for the suit himself it’s a very bad idea. Avenatti’s quite publicly broke, even got thrown out of his offices in San Diego last year for nonpayment of rent. While that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s literally broke since he’s no doubt sheltered assets somewhere, it means that winning in a suit against him is going to be a sort of hollow victory. I suspect any plaintiff against Avenatti at this point would come up empty-handed even if they won.

Not only is he broke, he’s in the hole. If I remember correctly he owes the IRS about $5 million, he owes $10 million to his fellow law partners for running his law firm into the ground, and now this. He’s also going to owe his ex-girlfriend a lot of money for beating the holy crap out of her when that case hits trial. I didn’t wade through all the media to determine how far he’s in debt but it’s gotta be a lot. I’d bet the farm that this guy has a nose-candy problem.
