Chinas Global Times newspaper defended the pro-Communist leadership of Hong Kongs decision to use tear gas and rubber bullets on pro-democracy protesters Wednesday, insisting that the thousands of mostly young students opposing a law that would allow their extradition into the mainland were violent extremists radicalized by the United States.
....
Many protesters expressed concern that the law would result in their extradition and imprisonment if they criticized the government in public in Hong Kong, where China nominally agreed to allow autonomy following Britains withdrawal. China and Hong Kong agreed to co-exist under what China calls One Country, Two Systems, an arrangement that allows Hong Kong to continue its capitalist traditions but makes China sovereign over it. China has consistently pushed the limits of One Country, Two Systems, allowing business to continue in Hong Kong while attempting to curb individual rights of expression and making Hong Kong politicians beholden to Chinese interests.
The Global Times, which often acts as a mouthpiece for the Chinese government, claimed the outsized protests in Hong Kong this week were the product of powerful interference from foreign forces, especially the US, and that locals were growing concerned that the protesters would harm the stability of the administrative region.
Referring to the protests on Wednesday, in which police attacked protesters, the Global Times said, the violent incident has brought heavy criticism from different groups in Hong Kong, since this has seriously harmed the stability and prosperity of the city. It quoted several alleged locals who claimed that American misdirection had inspired the protests. One claimed that the vast majority of the protesters who support the extradition law if they knew what its really about. Another called support for the protests very irresponsible.

Lovers of liberty are buoyed by American example
Yeah, it couldn’t be Chinese government oppression causing it.
While the U. S would officially object to any rough treatment of the inhabitants of Hong Kong, it would still be an internal matter.
“Lovers of liberty are buoyed by American example”
Actually, it’s that China promised they wouldn’t interfere with the freedoms the residents had for fifty years. But this new piece of legislation allows HK residents to be sent to China and tried under Chinese courts. Outcomes of Chinese trials are predetermined by politicians. That is why they are protesting.
China did it all by itself.
The extradition law is crafted in such a way that HK can send anyone to China and this includes foreigners living here, tourists and even those in transit.
Even with the protests, HK government is hell-bent to push the bill through and get it signed into law. However, with the current state of protests, the government may just table the bill- for now. Have to wait and see what happens.
One day I’d like to see Hong Kong or Taiwan rule a free China.
Yeah, pretty cool huh.
I’d settle for the mainland to become a free China and let Hong Kong, Taiwan, perhaps a couple other places get their own sovereignty.
Nothing to do with trade - it was about extradition.
Let’s hope Beijing throws Carrie Lam under a bus.
The crowds will be back today.
Typical commies blaming everyone but themselves. The US didn’t write this shit sandwich law.
Two words china despite your denials .... Tianamen Square
You know what some PRC papers are doing?
They’ll snap a photo of tens of thousands in a HK demonstrating crowd, zoom in on the ONE honky in it, then blow him up and call him a CIA AGENT:
They’re actually doing that.
Since Hong Kong demonstrators are then agents of foreign powers, I fully expect Xi Jinping to roll out the tanks at some point. The question is whether Hong Kongers will put up a fight. I think they’ll run. They’d better get going, because Hong Kong is about to become a vast open air prison. If there’s a rerun of the incident at the Gate of Heavenly Peace 3 decades ago, it should be interesting to see if this occurs at yet another place with a suitably mellifluous name. Kind of like Judy Garland’s rendition of “Over the Rainbw” playing during the course of balletic gunplay in a schoolyard, while Nic Cage was munching on the scenery in Face-Off.
Perfect. This is what is supposed to happen.
The savage human rights violations begin or the chicoms will fold on the trade talks. They can’t afford an uprising of the sheeple that now know prosperity.
Funny isnt it that Chinese youth want liberty and freedom and US youth want communism. Can we trade?
It must be really bad if they have to resort to blame shifting.
This is one lady who deserves the Ceausescu treatment.
Too bad that requires a bigger armed force than the Hong Kong people have currently got.
[It must be really bad if they have to resort to blame shifting.]
China needs to lose control of Honk Kong again for violating their agreement. Let’s call the new nation Free China.
