The FBI is now investigating six mysterious deaths of seemingly healthy Americans who died suddenly at one of two resorts in the Dominican Republic within the past year. ~snip~
US State Department officials have issued a travel advisory for American tourists heading to the DR, telling vacationers to exercise 'increased caution'.
'Violent crime, including armed robbery, homicide and sexual assault is a concern throughout the Dominican Republic,' the advisory stated on April 15. 'The wide availability of weapons, the use and trade of illicit drugs, and a weak criminal justice system contribute to the high level of criminality on the broader scale.'

Yes...pretty much the same could be said about most major US cities as well, though I admit that I have no problem walking around many areas in Boston.
I guess as long as you are somewhat familiar with the area, not a female, and keep your head on a swivel, you should be okay, but...it is important to know the area.
In Boston, I walked from the Boston Garden to the North End after a hockey game with a Finnish woman and her young son who were visiting me, and they were so terrified that I had to turn back. I was just bringing them over for some Italian desserts and coffee.
Now, I know that area. Traditionally, the North End in Boston has been extremely safe over the years because of the reputed mob presence there (I know, all the Italians) that kept the crime down.
Now, I knew that, but...my Finnish guests didn’t and the dark warehouses we walked by filled them with terror. It DOES look like something out of a violent movie there until you get to the North End proper.
Washington DC is a great example. There are places you can walk with no problem and feel pretty safe. But if you go two blocks in the wrong direction, you can go from very safe to very dangerous.
I was going to one of the Washington DC Freeps outside Walter Reed hospital, and ended up staying at a hotel on Georgia Ave. near Howard University, because that was all I could find.
Well, you look at your surroundings, and the liquor store next to us, when it was 9:00 PM, on the dot, had the bars come down and lights go out. And I heard a gunshot later that night. Not a safe place at all.
Gotta know your surroundings.

Walking on the beach barefoot results in hookworm parasite.
Lethal outbreak of histoplasmosis from fat guano cave openings.
Tourist camera man mugged stabbed 24 times- dead.
Peace Corp worker sexually assaulted.
Homemade liquor kills 12, sickens 21.
- 21 hospitalized after drinking the same alcohol at funeral of victims killed by homemade liquor in Dominican Republic.
Not surprising in the least.
Never touch anything in a mini-bar in a hotel room.
The best thing that can happen if you do is that you will be badly ripped off.
And it’s unsanitary -the reported food poisoning is off the charts. These places are not cheap, the All-inclusive resorts charging $!,000 per day.

Ugh. For my part, you only have to remember it is separated from the hellhole that is Haiti by only a fence, not even a body of water.
Will they report to Frau Mueller and inform us that President Trump might be/was responsible for these deaths.
However, they could not find any evidence showing that he was responsible.
Also for entertainment, Floriduh has Florida Guy and Florida Girl.
Well, I guess well never get to the bottom of THAT...
Two more for the DR dead pile. They may want to exhume these two and see if it was more than alcohol in their systems before they drove off the cliff.
“Portia Ravenelle and Orlando Moore were killed in an auto accident last April. The two had been staying at the Bahia Principe Cayacoa and were making their way to the airport to catch their return flight to Liberty-Newark Airport when their car plunged into the Caribbean Sea. Investigators believe alcohol, speed and the unfamiliar roadways contributed to the accident.”
I read an article yesterday about an Italian man who was the 27th tourist to die in the DR in the recent spate of deaths. The causes of death for all 27 were not detailed, and some are definitely not poisoning cases (the Italian was beaten to death with a pipe). But I think US media is focusing only on the Americans — there are likely more victims.
What a hellhole Freeport is. Once about thirty years ago I found myself there and rented a motor scooter to explore the area. I was going down a rural road when I saw two young men walking toward me. One had a long shovel handle with a cord around his wrist, but they did nothing threatening. As I approached, I had a strange intuition and pulled further away, toward the left, as they passed by. I think the shovel handle missed my head by not more than an inch.
As we type, the deluded are working feverishly to determine if PDJT or the Trump Org. has colluded with the DR. And now we know that collusion is possible...

Young Turkish reality show camera man refused to give up his camera outside the resort, stabbed to death in broad daylight, surrounded by people.
Right now, I agree with you. Homemade booze
Ban travel to there and they quickly find the bad guy.

Maybe in 6 yea4s and 8 million pieces of paper work later they’ll come up with the wrong answer.
My gut has always made me say no to travel anywhere in the Caribbean islands.
[On a side note: I just goggled the word Caribbean (checking my spelling) and guess what the top links that came up were? They were a set of travel suggestions and the first two were to ......................................... Cuba!!! No surprise, given that was Goggle.]
No but the FBI and DOJ are both corrupt
Bahia ia one of my favorites...been there many times...but haven’t been there in 10 years or so.
