Loudoun County Supervisor Geary Higgins handily defeated his board colleague Ron Meyer in the 13th Senate District Republican primary on Tuesday.
Higgins claimed 65 percent of the vote to Meyer's 35 percent.
The 13th Senate District seat is being vacated by the retiring Dick Black, who supported Higgins in the primary. Black won his 2015 contest by nearly 5 percent of the vote over Democrat Jill McCabe.
Higgins will face state Del. John Bell (D-87th) in the general election.
Addressing supporters Tuesday night, Higgins said he will fight to "protect liberties and quality of life."
"No one in this room is under the illusion that it's going to be an easy race," Higgins said. "For us it's going to be a tough race. Over the next five months we're going to be outspent, we're going to be attacked, but I believe that we will prevail with all your support and enthusiasm that I've had today."
Higgins ran to the right of Meyer during the primary, consistently touting his support for President Donald Trump's border wall, his pro-life views and support for the Second Amendment.

FReepers may remember that Jill McCabe is the wife of fired FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe. Hillary Clinton gave over 1/2 million to Jill McCabes 2015 race. Nothing suspicious about that. ;-)
Nah. But a Trump lawyer giving extortion money to a former Trump lover IS a “campaign contribution finance violation” of course.
