Firstly, from what I know of David Ortiz, myself - as a man and a 65 year baseball fan and player, I always appreciated his incredibly excellent skills and his apparent pleasant personality.

To this point, seeing that this is a story about a singular nut shooting Papi, not for robbery or that kind of thing, it brings a personal story to mind.

****

Back in the 90's my wife and I flew from Pittsburgh to Chicago to see our Pirates play at Wrigley. We registered at the hotel at which we stayed as members of the Pirate family, as it was set up by friends of the Pirates.

Late in the night around midnight the night before the game, my wife and I, (both of us in our mid 30's) decided to have a drink at the hotel bar before retiring for the night.

As we were there at the hotel bar, we found ourselves sitting beside a prominent player. He had played for a number of teams and was highly regarded.

He was sitting beside my wife, we were in conversation with him, then at one point he decided to EXPOSE HIMSELF there at the bar. He just pulled it out as he was sitting on his bar stool. Pretty bizarre.

I could see that if I (or someone else) were of the temperament to respond violently and was a guy with a weapon, I might have gone to get my weapon and shot the guy.

I hope this kind of thing is NOT what happened with Papi....... and I sincerely doubt it.

Anyhow ..... a number of these "sports heroes" are not what they seem.

And this immediately reminds me of Benny "Kid" Paret and Emile Griffith.
