Boris Johnson has said he does not believe the Irish border would be affected if the UK left the European Union.
Mr Johnson announced a £62m order for County Antrim firm Wrightbus.
However, ahead of June's EU referendum he has discussed why he thinks the UK would be better off outside the European Union.
He told the BBC a Brexit would leave arrangements on the Irish border "absolutely unchanged".
"There's been a free travel area between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland for, I think, getting on for 100 years," he said.
"There's no reason at all why that should cease to be the case."
Northern Ireland farming relies heavily on EU subsidies, but Mr Johnson said NI farmers would be no worse off outside the EU and "in many ways better off".
"You would be able to target the subsidy and we'd be getting money back from the EU that currently goes to Brussels and goes on heaven knows what," he said.
"We lose about £8.5bn to £9bn per year and we never see it again."
He said he was taking a different position on the EU from Mr Cameron, because he did not think the prime minister had secured the reform that was needed.
"I think that there is every chance that the people will see that this is really their chance to get power back from Brussels," he said.
"Time for freedom folks is what I would say."..
"I would say it comes down to a very simple argument, which is do we want a greater United Kingdom inside the European Union with the safety, the strength and the prosperity?" he said.
"Or do we want a great leap in the dark?"

Boris Johnson: Brexit would not affect Irish borderBojo could have said that three years ago.
UK needs to leave Ireland.
Ulster will be part of the Irish Republic within 30 years.
Demographics will drive this though, economically, the Republic cannot afford to assume the huge subsidies England pays to sustain Northern Ireland. The Brits May want devolution more than the Irish Nationals.
About 30% to 40% of northern ireland wants to remain as part of the UK
True. from what I’ve read, NI costs $7.2 billion to the UK. that’s about 2.3% of Republic of Ireland GDP.
If that was true we’d have GTFO years ago. What people don’t understand, especially Irish Americans, is that the British government has being trying to get out of Northern Ireland ever since that enclave was created, but can’t because the majority of the NI population want to stay British and therefore cannot get a democratic mandate to pull out. If so much as 50% + 1 of the populationf of Northern Ireland wanted to unite with the republic, we’d be out like a shot and well rid of this economic liability.
I am personally looking forward to the day when we finally get to hand over the Northern Irish fustercluck to the Irish Republic and watch from a distance as they have to deal with the same shit we did during the Troubles, only with less capacity to mollify angry locals by pumping it full of cash to keep public services and employment going.
Considering how warm and fuzzy Ireland is getting with Iran, maybe it SHOULD affect the border...
Warm and fuzzy?
Though to be fair I don’t understand why we would ally with Saudia against Iran - isn’t it better to wash our hands of both the Sunnis and the Shias?
I think quite clearly if there was a vote now, then a narrow majority or more would vote to leave the UK and reunite with the RoI.
I personally don’t think it should be allowed unless it is a supermajority - 60% or more (the same with Scottish independence).
Let’s assume that 60% do vote to reunite. Of the remaining 40% I’m going to bet a large number will move to the UK before the union.
NI united with the RoI will change its fortunes for the better.
England-Wales without NI would also be better - you’d have a far, far clearer mandate for Hard no-deal Brexit (still less than 60%, but I would wager at 53%) and no worries about an Irish backstop or anything like that.
Most Americans couldn’t care less about Northern Ireland.
So EU citizens and goods will be able to move freely over the border? How does that assert UK sovereignty?
If they didn't have a common enemy in the US, I'd agree.
they have a common enemy that is non-Muslims. But this is the standard Arab (even though the Iranis are not Arabs) view of
Me against my brother
My brother and me against my cousin
My cousin, my brother and me against the world
We should direct them to kill each other and not get involved.
It doesn’t - it’s insane. That’s why the UK should cut off Northern ireland as solarempire suggests. Give it to RoI
I really dont see an independence referendum in NIs future. The Brits were incredibly nice and civilized to give the Scots one. Who else does that? Not America, China, Russia, Spain, Turkey, France, Belgium, hell, hardly anybody else has allowed even one.
Give us a few more years to increase our oil and gas production a bit more first. Then after that, the Middle East outside of Israel can go to hell in a handbasket for all I care. It wont be our problem any more.
Everybody else should be rather concerned though.
