Chiapas used to be such a bad place even Mexicans didn't go there..................
Fascinating thing about Mexico is that they have kind of have the whole skin color / ethnicity issue of their own, but their’s is “Indio” (indigenous people) ancestry or Spaniard.
People with more european features and lighter skin are more typically wealthy and at the top of Mexican society. Darker skinned people, with the facial features usually associated with indigenous people are rarely at the top of Mexican society.
And in Chiapas itself, there was a real nasty separatist group that the federal government dealt with pretty harshly (combat deaths, forced relocations, and other counter-insurgency measures) in the mid-90’s.
It still is. That never changed.
I’d add Oaxaca, Guerrero, and Michoacan to the list of states to never, ever go to either.
