The political situation in Spain at the time was chaotic with Muslim rulers fighting Christian’s, Muslims fighting other Muslims with Christian allies and vice versa on the Christian side.

I love that show. It is visually and musically stunning.
Yes, this was even shown in the movie. He was not fighting Muslims per se, but Moors bent on conquest. The movie is highly fictionalized, but a great one nonetheless. I actually prefer El Cid to Ben-Hur.

This Charlton Heston movie followed his ultra successful 1959 Ben-Hur epic and was hoped to equal it. While it is impressive, Ben-Hur has remained on top.
Historically, Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, lived in the 11th Century, 3 centuries after the initial Islamic invasion of 711. The high point of that invasion tide was probably the Battle of Tours / Poitiers in 732 where Charles Martel of the Franks defeated the Spain-based Islamic forces.
The Reconquista lasted to 1492 when the last Islamic city of Grenada surrendered to the forces of Ferdinand & Isabella.
