Senate Homeland Security Committee Chairman Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) says the votes arent there to block President Trumps threat to impose a new round of tariffs on Mexico, despite broad concerns among GOP lawmakers.
Johnson, an outspoken critic of Trumps trade policies, says there wont be enough votes to override the presidents expected veto of a disapproval resolution to block additional tariffs against Mexico.
He said he informed Mexican Ambassador Martha Bárcena Coqui of the political reality on Capitol Hill in a phone call Wednesday morning.

ANY Republican who expects to stand for re-election would be insane to vote to block the ONLY person seriously trying to stem the invasion.
Sure would be nice if the Republicans didn’t feel the need to make this a big-ass drama play. They need to simply say to Mexico - END THIS CRAP, and by saying that, Mexico actually will do just that.
ANY American period is a traitor if they are against anything that would stop or impead this onslaught against our sovereignty. Hang em high!
There is a real easy solution to the whole thing. Mexico stops people from Latin America from crossing their country to get to our border. No tariffs!
Good. Go, Trump!
“Sure would be nice if the Republicans didnt feel the need to make this a big-ass drama play.”
No kidding. Hopefully, Mexico has gotten the word that the tariffs will go into effect. I get the impression that tomorrow will be the last day of negotiations between the two countries for a while. Hard to believe that Mexico will be able to prevent them. We shouldn’t stop the tariffs until and unless Mexico proves over some reasonable time that they’re doing what’s required.
On a side note, does anyone now how a government collects tariffs?
I suspect the gopE corporate stooges are getting an ear full on this. I will be surprised if we much more from the senate gopE about these tariffs. mitt excluded of course.
it’s not just latin america coming - it’s people from all over the world getting to mexico and coming on north for the freebies.
OK
Double them fast. Tax cash remittances 20%. For those that don’t live in the West there are 30 million here, easy. It’s out of control. Imagine the cost and societal set back that has been inflicted on the US citizen?
Trump is exposing the congressional Republicans as badly as he did the 16 useless stiffs he ran against in 2016.
Yes. When cargo moves across a border, there's a 'border crossing' (port or land point crossing) with U.S. Customs office. The cargo has to have documentation presented to U.S. customs (Commercial invoice, transport Bill of Lading - showing the list of the items being crossed into the U.S. along with their stated value for each item) before the cargo can be cleared to cross further into the U.S. Customs will levy a "duty" charge (based on the U.S. tariff rate for that specific item or commodity). That duty charge will be charged to the U.S. Importer showing on the documents, and that duty has to be paid (usually by the Import Broker acting on the Importer's behalf who already has an established account with U.S. customs based on the Importer's "bond" that has been placed prior with U.S. customs to allow speedy clearance of goods into US soil.
Thanks!
I’ve been tweeting to all of them that come up on my RADAR...maybe more of us should make specific comments to them instead of confining it to FR...
“ANY Republican who expects to stand for re-election would be insane to vote to block the ONLY person seriously trying to stem the invasion.”
That would be virtually ALL of them, save the Freedom Caucus people in the House. The “remaking of the Senate GOP” must start with the 2020 election.
Trump should also begin heavily taxing “remittances” from illegals here “sending money home!” Seems to me that laws must surely exist in the IRS which allow for withholding on funds being sent out of the country for which the income taxes can be shown not to have been paid.
To pacify the business political funders, there must be lip service to opposing changing the Mexican status quo. There will be no action hoewver.
If Mexico believes the congress is on their side, the Trump team will set them straight.
Sanctions? Yes there can be Mexican sanctions.
Tariffs are great!!! More please!!!! Return the Republican Party to its protectionist roots now!!!
Tax,tax, tax
