Voters Soundly Reject Property Tax Hike To Fund LAUSD
cbs2la ^ | 06/05/2019

If approved, it would have imposed a levy of 16 cents per square foot of building improvements on properties within the district. On a 1,700-square-foot home, that would have amounted to another $272 of tax per year.

A parcel tax is not based on the assessed value of a property, but is generally a flat fee based on square footage. It requires a two-thirds margin for approval.

LAUSD desperately needed the tax to pass in order to cover the increase in costs associated with the latest teachers’ union contract.

In January, LAUSD’s 34,000 teachers went on a 9-day strike, the first such strike in 30 years. It finally came to an end when the district reached a deal with teachers union, United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA), which included a 6 percent pay hike for teachers and an increase in support staff at each school, such as librarians and counselors. The deal also included a reduction in class sizes.

That is within a few bucks of my current TOTAL property tax on 32 acres and a home, shop and barn.

Public schools are a 19th century paradigm that outlived its usefulness at the turn of the 21st century.

Old habits die hard. Of course, they make great free daycare for two income families (also known as indentured slavery).

Public unions are the all time largest political donors in history

They give 99-1 to democrats.

In deep blue area, their insane pensions will be paid into bankruptcy.

54% to 46% isn’t resounding. It is just enough.

Teacher pay in LA is between 53 and about 95K / year already. I doubt many are making the 53.

I have heard that property taxes were low in KY, but dang!!!!

My property tax bill is 20x more than yours, but TX gives with the one hand of no income taxes and then takes with other hand of high property taxes, plus other crap fees here and there on your insurance, utilities, and of course, sales taxes.

So now the Left will get some California judge to impose the tax based on a penumbra of Lenin or something.

Enrollment has been falling every year, 80% of LAUSD students are Illegal Aliens or Children of Illegal Aliens, ALL the money is needed for their failing pension plan, I am glad it failed even though I don’t live in the City of LA.

STOP EDUCATING MEXICO’S CITIZENS!!

So the teacher pay hikes are now unfunded.

Gee, who couldn’t foresee THIS happening?

Yep. Kentucky has a state income tax. However, there is no income tax on Social Security. If you play your cards right, you can live here pretty cheaply. And if you have your own chickens, a garden and a cow or three, even cheaper.

The downside is that it means there is more “riff raff”. ;) That is why we have more people on disability. You can literally live on it here, so people fight hard for it. My neighbor was told by two different doctors that he was not eligible, but he kept pressing and finally found someone that would rubber stamp his request.

He’s not living in the lap o’ luxury, but he’s doing fine, and even has a motorcycle. It’s not licensed or insured, but since the local sheriff is his cousin and you never, EVER see cops around here, he uses it to putter around in a five mile radius. :)

Our place is on a knob and, when the trees have leaves, it is utterly private. We don’t see his place in the valley (and it is about 500 yards away).

The only downside here is the bugs. But I discovered permathrin a few years ago so that’s no longer an issue.

You could easily reduce class size by deporting illegals. No tax necessary.

Ha! Ha! Ha!

I hope their next round of salary negotiations runs on for months and they actually have to do what everyone else does, cut costs.

Yeah, we got bugs in North Texas too.

I’ve avoided permathrin because we have flowering plants in our yard that Mrs. L,TOWM likes and that stuff does in bees, too.

Carry on FRiend!

“80% of LAUSD students are Illegal Aliens or Children of Illegal Aliens”

Incredible! Are you sure that’s correct?

How much of the LA tax burden do the Aliens shoulder?

The current public school education model and costs are no longer tenable.

I only put it on our clothes.

BTW, we have a huge carpenter bee problem here. I’ve found that wasp spray into their holes will terminate, but my favorite method is a tennis racket. :)
