The Northern Virginia pastor who prayed for President Trump on stage after an unscheduled visit Sunday explained why he did so, acknowledging "some within our church...are hurt that I made this decision."
David Platt, McLean Bible Church pastor, told his congregation, in a statement, that his "aim was in no way to endorse the president, his policies, or his party, but to obey Gods command to pray for our president and other leaders" as mentioned in the Bible.
While the megachurch was not one of the churches that joined Rev. Franklin Graham's "Special Day of Prayer" for Trump, Platt acknowledged it from the platform, adding "we don't want to do that just on this Sunday, we want to do that continually, day in and day out."
Platt read the same portion of Scripture, 1 Timothy 2:1-6, that Graham shared which specifically calls believers to pray those "in high positions," before he prayed for two and a half minutes, for "wisdom" for the president and for leaders across the nation, explaining to his members "it is good, and pleasing in the sight of God, to pray for the president."
The former president of the Southern Baptist Convention's International Mission Board, who has said churches should focus on Jesus Christ and not nationalism, said: "So, in that moment, I decided to take this unique opportunity for us as a church to pray over him together."
"For a variety of valid reasons," the pastor explained, some were hurt by Platt's decision, which "weighs heavy on my heart."
Platt did not apologize for praying for Trump -- as some outlets originally reported -- but tried to clarify for his congregation why he did so.

“some within our church...are hurt that I made this decision.”
Then they need to go over to Buttigieg’s “church”.
I don’t remember being taught that apology is part of prayer.
I pray for our president. I pray for this preacher. We all need it, and I’m not sorry.
I guess to put it as gently and politely as my NYC etiquette will let me...
Those that were hurt can go #### themselves.
And then hopefully move.
“some within our church...are hurt that I made this decision.”
How Christian of them....heathens...
I have found that there are a whole lot of Christians that think they know better than God’s word.
You’re not much of a Christian if you only pray for those you like ... See Matthew 5:44
If people are hurt by someone praying for someone, then they need to study scripture a bit more in depth.
The Bible tell us to pray for our leaders - and he is apologizing for following the Bible?
...and forgive us our offenses as we forgive those who offend us.
“weighs heavy on my heart.”
Is it OK to say I hate this language? The fact that some objected means it’s time to lead not emote. How about a simple, “If you object to the President then you should pray more for him.”
Pandering to those offended by the Word of God? What is that church based in?
Proverbs 30:12 describes these people to a tee. “There are those who are pure on their own eyes who are not yet cleansed of their filth.”
Typical Media...turning words into what they want to say, not what was actually said...
THIS IS WHY MEDIA IS WORTHLESS..
They are those who cherry pick Scripture as it suits themselves.
David Platt, McLean Bible Church pastor, needs to learn about leadership, backbone, and following a biblically sound path to pray for our leaders.
IF( I thought it was debunked) IF he DID issued an apology I say to the deep core bible believing lovers of Jesus Christ in that church....RAN and never turn back!!!! Bottom line it’s all about # and $$ signs instead of feeding the congregation with mana true bible teachings!! JESUS NEVER APOLOGIZED for praying and laying hands on those that the Jewish people called undesirables and untouchables! Shame on that Pastor if he did apologize! Truly he teaches’s apostasies instead of truth!
What valid reasons did his congregants give for not praying for President Trump?
I bet you ten to one that those who were hurt by this support homosexuality and abortion. Also illegal immigration.
One reason people in this country are staying away from churches is squishy ministers who try to adapt the word of God to modern progressive sensibilities. Oil and water do not mix.
