Key Senate Republicans are pushing back against President Donald Trump’s threat to impose new tariffs on Mexico to stem the flow of migrants, though it’s unclear whether lawmakers will take action.

The president’s announcement Thursday surprised many Republicans who hoped to focus on passing a new trade deal with Mexico and Canada known as the USMCA. That deal now faces fresh peril, a number of GOP senators said Friday.

Putting on my political analyst hat:

The only way Trump gets re-elected is with a strong economy.Tariffs on Mexico will cause retaliation tariffs. (Ex. manufactured goods that were assembled in Mexico despite the parts being built here or elsewhere) Retaliatory tariffs will hurt the US. particularly in the agriculture sector which is already hurting from the China tariffs. That was a crucial voting block for Trump. (Chinese tariffs are another matter as the Chinese have been ripping off our intellectual property for decades) Trump won by the narrowest of margins in MI, OH, PA and WI. He also won by relatively small margins in the farm states. If the economy is bad enough to flip a relatively small percentage of Trump voters, who vote on economic condition and not on political ideology, then say hello to one of the DNC clowns. There will not be enough time to reverse the tariffs effects relating to the November 2020 election IF they are fully implemented by October 2019.

My prediction: Since Trump seems to change his mind on tariffs on a daily basis, he will realize it is not a good idea to punish Mexico because we can’t control our borders. He will slowly back off of this threat. He needs to take the fight to the Democrats, not the Mexicans

It irks the US Chamber of Commerce who is opposed to the tariffs AND who’s PACs donated to the campaigns of many Republicans! McSally received $5,000.

That’s because it IS all about the benjamins for the US Chamber of Commerce!

We’ve heard how business really don’t care who is in power, it is all about being able to make money. Time to force the Chamber to choose & not hog tie Republicans because their PACs gave lots of money to Republican campaigns!

Republicans in Congress are owned by large donors. Suppose to represent the people of their district or State.

n the hundreds of postings here in Free Republic rarely is this brought up. It’s Known As Reciprocity. We should be treating anybody illegally crossing the Mexican border into the US the way the Mexican’s do;

Any American illegally .crossing into Mexico. Before being kicked out can get a heavy fine and possible imprisonment.

It’s time we consider illegal entry by any person who is a non Mexican citizen illegally entering the United States through the US Mexican border a defacto Mexican citizen with limited Mexican constitutional rights subject to their laws while transiting. As well as any Mexican citizen entering illegally exempting those who do so legally.

According to the Mexican constitution Americans legally in Mexico get a 2nd class treatment. Besides being unable to vote one must also be a citizen to own land and Mexico is very restrictive about granting citizenship. Because of that a US citizen besides not being able to vote,and cannot have title in their name to any land property in Mexico. It’s time the US should consider making that reciprocal.

Prohibit and fully legally enforce punishment to violators offering any illegal entrant employment, voting, and land ownership privileges .In other words the incentives to those thinking of sneakimg into this country are removed and those that do better expect expulsion no job no voting no landowning ..
