The US Navy acknowledged Friday that a request had been made regarding the USS John S. McCain in relation to President Donald Trump's visit to Japan, but said the ship ended up remaining in its normal configuration.
The statement continues a saga stemming from emails exchanged between the White House and lower-level US Navy officials about keeping a warship named for the late Sen. John McCain's father and grandfather out of sight ahead of the President's trip.
"A request was made to the U.S. Navy to minimize the visibility of USS John S. McCain, however, all ships remained in their normal configuration during the President's visit," Rear Adm. Charlie Brown, chief of Navy information, said in a statement. "There were also no intentional efforts to explicitly exclude Sailors assigned to USS John S. McCain."
Brown added that the Navy is "fully cooperating with the review of this matter tasked by" acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan.
Two Navy officials told CNN on Wednesday that the White House Military Office had asked lower-level US Navy officials about keeping the ship out of view -- an impractical request as the ship was under repair, one of the officials said.
"Once leadership heard about it, they said knock it off," a senior Navy official told CNN.
*** The ship ultimately was not moved nor was the name obscured, said Cmdr. Clay Doss, a spokesman for the 7th Fleet. ***

Bingo. Several of us have pointed this out on this site hundreds of times. This is his biggest failure. For all the talk of his greatness, it's this one failure or lack of insight that is killing him. It's tripped him up from day one. He didn't purge the Obama hold-overs and he surrounded himself with OBVIOUS deep-staters and RINOS-people that everyone on here knew were bad news.
Eventually, the most ardent fans are going to have to realize this isn't some grand strategy but it's a flaw. Almost every single person that ends up leaving the administration is critical of him after leaving. Very few members of his inner circle have remained loyal. Say what you want to about the left - but they know how to keep the wagons circled. I thought DJT would be able to do that better than Clinton and Obama. I was dead wrong.
Kinda like aviators call a six month deployment a ‘cruise’ that’s only three months long, because they’re sleeping for half of it.
Nice hearing from you, hope all is well-
LOL, I forgot all about that “penis shaped contrails” thing...
This is just stupidity. I thought Dan Bongino’s hypothesis was more likely than anything else. Someone on a B-Team was being stupid. This didn’t come from Trump, and anyone who thinks it did is a moron. End of story.
It isn’t even named after the Turd McCain, it is named after his grandfather for God’s sake.
I don’t even pay attention to these things. It is like giving a click to CNN, NYT, or WaPo.
"I'm pretty smashed here. I'm headin' back to the boat."
Agree with waste of time...
As to ship, ‘THEY’ did add McStain to the list, which - IMNSHO, denigrates his Father & Grandfather.
After all, they(or at least the name) kept him in USNA and flight school where a ‘lesser’ person with same attitude/grades etc would have been a member of the fleet as enlisted.
I am sure adding McStain to the name is/was just an ‘in your face’ to the Rs ....then again, I ‘knew’ that ‘we’ wouldn’t get away with a Reagan/Ford/Bush trifecta... I can see weewillie, HRC & BO getting something other than a garbage scow named for them.
Paybacks are hell.
Lets get back to battles, mountains/volcanoes, cities/counties etc and DEAD people for the naming of ships.
+1
5.56mm
I missed that they added his name...ugh.
I deployed with JFK Battle Group after it left Philly half-repaired. You’re right - it was a boat, since it sure in hell wasn’t a warship.
I had also and was getting ready to slam the ‘no nothings’ yesterday ... will still refer to them as ‘no nothings’ as far as their Navy (lack of) expertise goes, but glad I checked...Nothing worse than to call someone on something and find out he/she is right (whether THEY know it or not)...
Well, it sure was deadly to any small boy who got in its way, that’s for sure.
Are you talking about when it was repaired after the Belknap collision?
Well, a stopped clock is right twice a day!
Not a Military Zulu clock....
WOW - I always thought that picture with Obama was a photo shop meme.
It’s no meme. I saw the televised debate where McCain did that.
He made Obama seem so ... mature. Hate to have voted for him, but it was really Palin I voted for.
LOL, good point!
No, I’m speaking about when they left the Philly shipyards and went to Mayport, with one catapult and one elevator operational. Do you recall the wives club protesting in the middle of Jacksonville?
LOL, no...I was in back in the Seventies...she wasn’t homeported there then.
I do remember being at sea one time, and having the entire ship lose all electrical power and go dead in the water.
I never did find out what that was all about!
I was conning a CG into Seal Beach for a weapons onload; as we approached the pier we went to General Quarters for a major lube oil leak. Never saw civilians on forklifts move ammo away from the pier so fast in my life.
Normally, the first word passed over the 1MC after ‘Shift Colors’ was ‘The Ship is Now On Water Hours’.
That is serious stuff, but...pretty funny!
