Experts are warning America has become too dependent on China for its medicine -- everything from painkillers, to antibiotics, and even aspirin can all be sourced back to a country the Department of Defense considers an adversary.
The Food and Drug Administration estimates that at least 80 percent of the active ingredients found in all of America's medicines come from abroad primarily China.
"Imagine if China turned off that spigot," said Rosemary Gibson, author of "China RX: The Risks of America's Dependence on China for Medicine." "China's aim is to become the global pharmacy to the world -- it says that. It wants to disrupt, to dominate, and displace American and other Western companies."
In 2015, China unveiled "Made in China 2025," a national plan to make it the world's leader in 10 high-tech manufacturing sectors, including bio-medicine, by 2025.
The new national security warning comes as China is threatening to weaponize its dominance in mining rare earth minerals against the United States, in an escalation of the ongoing trade war.
"I have no doubt that they would consider weaponizing their dominance of the pharmaceuticals market if they felt that that would give them an advantage over us strategically," retired Brig. Gen. John Adams told Fox News. Adams is also president of Guardian Six, a defense research consulting firm.
In a worst-case scenario, experts warn, China could withhold supply of medicines like important antibiotics, or degrade the quality of our medicines -- even put lethal contaminants in them. Even when it comes to treating anthrax, China is the largest exporter of the building block to make ciprofloxacin, an anthrax antidote.
The more probable threat from China, however, is that it could make America's prescription drugs more expensive.

So, I get my auto parts from Advance auto parts. If they go under, I get them from Oreiley’s.
I don’t see the problem here.
I will never forget how happy the entire bunch of quislings in congress, including the President were when they made the deal to Send All US Manufacturing and Technology to third world hell holes run by tin horn dictators and Communists.
The dependence on and enriching China is a national scandal/ crisis.
Meanwhile, $15 minimum wage laws are DESIGNED to chase and keep jobs overseas.
Jobs here are to be done by illegals.
The great irony is Mao and the communists, through a brutal process, organized the country for mass production to serve the State and Communism. Ironically, it has wound up serving the State and Western-style Capitalism.
American progressives love to put heavy burdens on producing in the USA - environment, liability, tax, insurance, gender-race-sex equality, etc... China was ready to capture all this when short-term American CEOs found they could save a lot of money by turning over their businesses to China and the Communist Party there.
At least Trump is pointing out this process has to be stopped.
Communists always said that Capitalists would sell them the rope that they would later be hanged with.

Don’t use their med’s if at all possible - they use fillers and other junk; a while back they sold vials of water for cancer treatment and the patient died (or several did), they looked just like the ‘script versions.
We import a S-ton of raw materials to make drug products here in the US from CHIIIIINA.
FYI - A S-ton is more than a plethora.
Worse than turning off the spigot, deliberately adulterating the medications and supplements with subtle but cumulatively highly deleterious compounds that end up creating a dependency that cannot be curbed or fought off?
Fentanyl mixed in with other opioids may at first appear to have the desired effect, but its long-term effects are always serious and may even be fatal.
This has already happened, folks, and it bodes to become ever so much worse.
So when Clinton wagged the dog with a missile strike on an aspirin factory, it was strategic. Cool.
Maybe Trump should insist that China (and not Mexico) stop Fentanyl exports.
Maybe drugs and their precursors should be added to the steel and aluminum essential domestic products list.
That’s a poor comparison. Both get their parts from the same places.
America is too dependent on China. Period.
Is that a metric S-ton, or an imperial measurement?
Bingo!
Also from India and Israel. Don’t they have to put country of origin on prescription bottles?
Experts are warning America has become too dependent on China for its medicine.
Not for much longer.
CHINA IS NOT OUR FRIEND!
I dont see the problem here.
The problem is that China is the sole supplier of ingredients (thousands) of medications manufactured everywhere. No shopping around would be possible if China suddenly curtailed the ingredient supply (or made them exhorbitantly expensive).
