The eight co-champions of the 2019 Scripps National Spelling Bee, from left, Shruthika Padhy, 13, of Cherry Hill, N.J., Erin Howard, 14, of Huntsville, Ala., Rishik Gandhasri, 13, of San Jose, Calif., Christopher Serrao, 13, of Whitehouse Station, N.J., Saketh Sundar, 13, of Clarksville, Md., Sohum Sukhatankar, 13, of Dallas, Texas, Rohan Raja, 13, of Irving, Texas, and Abhijay Kodali, 12, of Flower Mound, Texas, hold the trophy at the end of the competition in Oxon Hill, Md., Friday, May 31, 2019.

OXON HILL, Md. — The Latest on the National Spelling Bee (all times local):

12:07 p.m.

Eight spellers were better than the dictionary. They were better than anything the Scripps National Spelling Bee could throw at them. And they all ended up with a hand on the trophy.

In the most extraordinary ending in the 94-year history of the competition, the bee ended in an eight-way tie on Thursday night. The eight co-champions spelled the final 47 words correctly, going through five consecutive perfect rounds.

Each will get the full winner’s prize of $50,000 in cash.

Put that on your resume....and see how many job offers it gets you.

I just think it's a farce.

IIRC...They are provided with a complete list of words which include those used in the bee.

Indians are hard working high achievers. They don’t blame Whitey for anything. They don’t demand reparations.

Wondering why some SJW isn’t looking at the results of this bee and demanding the results be changed, since there are no highly-privileged government-certified minorities there, and most are boys.

So do you happen to have a particular interest in the contest—or was it just what was on?

It was either that, or old Bollywood movies.

Those kids earned it. It’s not a SJW competition.

Make up seven more, I’d guess, though rotating it could be another option.

Keep the trophy, just give me the $50,000 check......

Child abuse? Give me a break. You should celebrate academic achievement. These kids performed remarkably under intense pressure. They won on the basis of merit preparing them for the real world. Several of them were interviewed and said they wanted to be doctors. I watched the competition.

Nope. They are the worst people to work with. For every hard working smart Indian, there are ten lazy ass dummies.

They only hire their own and insert themselves into everything. Hire one and in 3 years, you’ll be the last non Indian in your department and they’ll fire you when you are on holiday.

They should implement Lightning Rounds with speed-spelling. Overall fastest speller wins.

Debbie Downer. No, they are not given a list of the words. They use the information provided by the host about the word to figure out the spelling, e.g., Latin, Greek, French, German, etc. It takes intelligence to compete and win. They will be doctors, lawyers, scientists, etc. It is obvious they have very high IQs.

I once interviewed a girl for a legal clerkship position -- top 10 firm -- who had all the requisite academic credentials. In looking at the rest of her resume, she also had been captain of the U.S. team that won the world championship for baton twirling in France.

I was impressed as hell. Being the best in the world at anything takes an enormous amount of dedication and focus. She actually organized the team, made all the arrangements, etc.. To me, that kind of commitment to excellence -- even at baton twirling -- said a lot about her personality and drive. I see those spelling bee kids the same way, and would consider that a huge plus in a hiring decision.

Predictably, it was the female attorneys who were the most opposed to hiring her fr a clerkship, and denigrated her extracurricular accomplishment. Gee, who would have guessed that....

“IIRC...They are provided with a complete list of words which include those used in the bee. “

Say it isn’t so. . . . :(

Bring back the original rules (or, something like that).

As I understand, the words come from published lists the competitors study. Undoubtedly there will be changes for next year to narrow the field.
