OXON HILL, Md. The Latest on the National Spelling Bee (all times local):
12:07 p.m.
Eight spellers were better than the dictionary. They were better than anything the Scripps National Spelling Bee could throw at them. And they all ended up with a hand on the trophy.
In the most extraordinary ending in the 94-year history of the competition, the bee ended in an eight-way tie on Thursday night. The eight co-champions spelled the final 47 words correctly, going through five consecutive perfect rounds.
Each will get the full winners prize of $50,000 in cash.

How did Erin Howard get in that group? She must be the token Anglo Saxon.
everybody gets a trophy ...
Spell COVFEFE
I watched this until the end. None of the kids were even close to dropping out and by the 17th round, near midnight, some of the kids were about to fall asleep in the stage. So they did something theyd never done, they went 3 more rounds, with the hardest words, and whoever was left standing would win. All 8 made it through all 3 stages. They deserve it.
Spell Toxic Masculinity
Which kind? White or Black?
I’m sorry, that word has been removed from the dictionary because it offended SJWs
So how will they handle the trophy? Make up seven more, I’d guess, though rotating it could be another option.
They are going to make 7 more of them.
Thanks.
So do you happen to have a particular interest in the contest—or was it just what was on?
The poor kids all already need glasses!
Everyone gets their own trophy and $50K each. Impressive kids. Hard work and parental involvement.
How about the results from the United States - I don’t really care who wins in India.
No, my husband turned it on,lol. We were just going to watch for a while but I got hooked lol. It was like extra innings. I was amazed at the words they were spelling even before the end. In the latest rounds they had words of places from obscure countries even.
The girls is from Huntsville, AL, the last Alabaman to win in 40 something years I think they said.
I guess they ran out of words to spell?
“Impressive kids. Hard work and parental involvement.”
Indeed. When parents get involved and push their kids’ education, results happen.
Wow—so they forked over another $350K to them honor them all? I guess with the TV ratings it is the least they could do.
I wonder if that size award leads to some borderline child abuse.
There is a story this week in CT where a reportedly abusive estranged husband/father of five seems to be the prime suspect in the wife/mother’s disappearance (she’d gone to court for a protective order, etc.), and one of the reported stories is how he wanted to make his kids waterskiing champions, so would have them out from 7 am to dusk some days.
