Good News for Joe Biden: (Crowd) Size Doesn’t Matter

You didn’t expect us to just let Uncle Joe coast to victory, did you? Where’s the fun without the Sturm und Drang?

In case you missed it, a media narrative developed this week to give pragmatic Democrats something new to worry about: Joe Biden’s “enthusiasm gap.”

The story goes like this: “He’s dominating in the polls, his fundraising is going gangbusters and he’s showing broad support from key political players in the early presidential states,” observed Politico this week. “So where are the big energetic crowds, the lines around the block to get into Joe Biden’s events?”

This raises several related questions: (1) Do large crowds correlate to winning, (2) should Joe Biden worry about the absence of large crowds, and (3) could said worrying be counterproductive?

That is exactly what Hillary Clinton did. When Bill called and told her that he had been in Michigan and that there were Trump signs everywhere, and told her that she had to win over the white guys in Michigan, she scoldingly told him that she had the women and minorities and had no need for the white guys. It is said that she was afraid that Trump would win the popular vote and she'd win the EC. To that end she spent a lot of money running ads in NY and CA, wanting to amp up the popular vote. I also remember that in 2015/16 all the talking heads were dismissing the huge and wildly enthusiastic crowds that Trump was drawing. They said that all those people who had to spend many hours standing in line and more hours packed like sardines inside didn't mean that they would actually go out and vote for Trump. The talking heads convinced themselves that the crowds were just there to see the train wreck that was Donald Trump and that they would either stay home or vote for Clinton.

When Trump was far ahead of his primary opponents with a number like that, the MSM wasn’t saying he was “dominating” the polls, they were repeatedly saying that this meant 62% of GOP primary voters wanted someone other than Trump.
