New Hampshire repeals death penalty as Senate overrides veto

New Hampshire, which hasn't executed anyone in 80 years and has only one inmate on death row, on Thursday became the latest state to abolish the death penalty when the state Senate voted to override the governor's veto.

New Hampshire's death penalty applied in only seven scenarios: the killing of an on-duty law enforcement officer or judge, murder for hire, murder during a rape, certain drug offenses, or home invasion and murder by someone already serving a life sentence without parole.

The state hasn't executed anyone since 1939, and the repeal bill would not apply retroactively to Michael Addison, who killed Manchester Officer Michael Briggs and is the state's only inmate on death row. But death penalty supporters argued that courts will interpret it differently, giving Addison a chance at life in prison.

Patrick Cheetham, past president of the New Hampshire Police Association, said he was frustrated by the outcome. He said the repeal effort was fueled largely by out-of-state interest groups who inaccurately portrayed the state as having applied the death penalty in an unjust manner. And he said the association would have opposed repeal even if there was no one on death row for killing a police officer.

"If it makes a criminal think twice, just once, and saves a police officer's life, we think the death penalty should stay," he said.

Judges and police should not enjoy special protections that everyone else does not enjoy.

The 14th Amendment is now at least partly returned to New Hampshire and that’s a good thing.

If it’s good enough for Cops, ain’t it good enough for everybody else? Jus’ Sayin’.

That way there’s no need for everyone to tie themselves into logic pretzels, whether they are for the death penalty or not.

None of this “Well I’m against the death penalty, except for _____”

How about this - Equality Before The Law. I know, I know, crazy talk.

Nope, not quite complete. IIRC they recently repealed "same day" voter registration (which was enacted by the Rats)....which allowed busloads of junkies and winos from Massachusetts to vote on Election Day.

Also,no income tax *or* sales tax.

But property tax that just rams you up the rear end.

My late cousin's husband lives in NH in a nice town..nice neighborhood...nice house. He pays about the same in property taxes that he'd pay for a similar house that you might find in suburban Boston.

I moved out of NH in 1990. It was a little house. Maybe 1,500 square feet.

I bought the house I live in now—the highest tax rate in MA—in 1993.

My property taxes for the 2750 sq ft house just passed the NH taxes in 2015.

I don’t know where your cousin lives, but my experience was I paid a ton in taxes and got very little in services. Medicare schools, no fire department, no trash pick up. But...no sales tax or income tax.

In the end, the no income tax thing worked out about the same.

I’d agree to abolish the death penalty, IF Democrats would agree to abolish abortion.

The Left doesn’t care about police lives. PERIOD. Now strike back any legal way you can, esp. exposing the outside communist and socialist groups who got involved in a state issue.

Names, names, names. Money, money, money. Instate friends - names.
