It was something like a 1.4% loss, after everyone but his wife slamming him in the press, and Republicans in Congress doing robocalls against him. Richard Shelby (Alabama's other Senator) got on National Television and urged everyone to *NOT VOTE* for Moore. He urged them to write in someone else.
That year Alabama had something like 23,000 write in votes, which would have won the race for Moore.
Richard Shelby helped stab Moore in the back, and based entirely upon the lies spread by the news media liars.

I am a Moore supporter also and it saddens me very much that such a fine man was politically assassinated because that’s what it amounts to. He is a very good Christian man who deserves better.

Shelby may or may not have done the right thing, but I suspect the ridiculous accusations against Moore had nothing to do with it. The real problem the GOP has with Moore was that hed been a royal pain in the ass in Alabama GOP politics for years.
Those guys undermined Moore because they knew damn well that he would be one of the most unreliable GOP votes in the U.S. Senate on almost ANY issue.
