A large earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.0 struck the Amazon jungle in north-central Peru early Sunday, the U.S. Geological survey reported, collapsing buildings and knocking out power to some areas.
The quake struck at 12:41 a.m. PDT, 47 miles southeast of the village of Lagunas and 57 miles east of the larger town of Yurimaguas. The epicenter was 68 miles below the surface.
In a tweet, President Martín Vizcarra called for calm and said that authorities were checking the affected areas.
The mayor of Lagunas, Arri Pezo, told local radio station RPP that the quake was felt very strongly there, but it was not possible to move around the town because of the darkness.
In Yurimaguas, a number of old houses collapsed and the electricity was cut, according to the National Emergency Operations Center.
In the capital, Lima, people ran out of their homes in fear.
Earthquakes are frequent in Peru, which lies on the Pacific's so-called Ring of Fire.

If you look at the locations of the cenotes, you will see that they are all in the north Yucatan, and form a perfect arc.
Said arc is centered on Puerto Chicxulub.
The cenotes are a shadow of the crater rim, a discontinuity that to this day cracks the deposits of limestone that have accumulated over the past 65 million years or so, since the meteor strike that eliminated everything that didn’t bury it’s eggs or dwell in burrows.
My wife is in Peru right now. I haven’t had any commo this morning. She wasn’t planning to be near the earthquake site.
The basic principle is still valid, there are hundreds of elegantly dressed and bejeweled child sacrifices buried in pits on the mountains of Peru.
That’s a good sized quake.

I have wondered more than once whether God is going to ask me what I did to stop abortion and I am going to need a VERY GOOD attorney.

Must have passed you in the courtyard as I was there also in the mid 80s - late spring - early summer of ‘85 I think. Did you see the panels (carved before the Spanish arrived) of the jungle animals which includes one which looks very much like a horse or a donkey?
No the HYPOCENTER was 68 miles below the surface. By definition the EPICENTER is ON the surface.
