Congress Finally Has A Deal To Help Puerto Rico And Other Disaster-Stricken Areas After Trump Caves
Buzzfeed News ^ | 05/23/2019 | Paul McLeod

Congress has reached a last-minute deal to provide $19.1 billion in emergency aid funding for a series of natural disasters after President Donald Trump dropped his demand that border wall funding be included.

The bill will provide aid to communities across America hit by hurricanes, flooding, wildfires, earthquakes and other natural disasters over the past three years, including Puerto Rico.

The package was held up for months as Trump objected to aid money to help Puerto Rico recover from the devastation of Hurricane Maria in 2017. Trump has repeatedly lied about how much disaster money the island has received. The final bill contains about a billion dollars for Puerto Rico: $600 million for food stamps programs, which began running out of money in February, and $304 in Community Development Block Grant funding to rebuild homes and infrastructure.

The Puerto Rico dispute was resolved in recent weeks, but talks hit a new impasse when Trump demanded the bill contain security funding for agencies policing the US-Mexican border. That package would also have contained aid for humanitarian programs supporting asylum seekers moving across the border, but Democrats opposed the added border security funding.

As recently as Wednesday evening it appeared a deal would not be reached before Congress left town and took Memorial Day week off. But a deal came together Thursday when Trump agreed to drop his border security demands. The bill is expected to pass the Senate Thursday afternoon and then the House Thursday or Friday, allowing Trump to sign it into law by the end of the week.

Puerto Rico has already gotten more money than any other natural disaster and it is not even close.

The Florida panhandle was struck by the most powerful hurricane in 40 years and has received nothing other than FEMA. No aid bill at all tho this one will probably include some.

I give up. No point fighting the tide. I think that after they bankrupt Trump over defending himself against the outrageous claims of illegality on his part, he will too.

73, I thought I could last out my life in relative peace. Tired of being played like a violin. I have a mind to send each piece of crap mail I get from the GOP asking for money back with a brick as long as it has a postage paid envelope.

Turn out the lights, the party is over

What the hell did WE get out of this? No border funding, a complete cave; lots of money for corrupt politicians in Puerto Rico (let them HAVE their independence); not a damned thing for Trump’s base and he gives in as he has done before. The Art of the Deal?? Hardly.

Do you have any idea how the media would play with this if Trump held out.

What are you? Five?

This issue isn’t worth 3 seconds of worry compared all the other things going on.

LOL. You guys are funny.

Trump isn’t “defunding himself” at all. It’s the left that is spending gazillions of dollars (yes, some of it taxpayer money) trying to “get” Trump and his family. Meanwhile, as the tide has slowly turned, all these tools are gonna lawyer up and THEY will be the bankrupt ones.

It will reach the Botoxics and Spewmores eventually. Patience.

Meanwhile, why in the world are you giving money to the GOP? Give it to individual candidates who represent your values.

“The package was held up for months as Trump objected to aid money to help “

Approving $600M for foodstamps (a figure DEMS originally claimed was “completely inadequate”) and a token $300M for community block grants, about 2/3rds less than the $849M originally asked, is hardly ‘caving’.

The package was held up for months as Dems held CONUS disaster funds hostage to (more) gravy for PR to mismanage, which claimed over $90B in hurricane damage, and which has already been allocated about half that. Trump is finding money elsewhere for the border but it should be noted that the DEMS continue to fight against approving any money for humanitarian assistance for ‘asylum seekers’ invading border states.

I see the concern trolls have no sense of reality or of patience...what have either of you done to help foster the Trump agenda - besides whine that he ain’t getting it done to your expectations?
All whine and no actual action...read my tagline - I sense it applies ...
