Robert C. Byrd: Child of the Appalachian Coalfields, Byrd recalled how his ability to quickly recruit 150 of his friends to the group impressed a top Klan official who told him, You have a talent for leadership, Bob ... The country needs young men like you in the leadership of the nation. Byrd later recalled, "Suddenly lights flashed in my mind! Someone important had recognized my abilities!
Byrd led the growing chapter and was eventually elected Exalted Cyclops of the local Klan unit.
In a 1944 letter to segregationist Mississippi Senator Theodore G. Bilbo, Byrd wrote, I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side. Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.
As late as 1946, Byrd wrote to the Klans Grand Wizard stating, The Klan is needed today as never before, and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia and in every state in the nation.
The party of Jim Crow, KKK, school segregation, and abortuaries in Negro neighborhoods should be, but aren't, ashamed of themselves. Filthy hypocrites.
They are betting that we're full of nothing but hot air and so far they are correct.
The Left acts. The Right stands on the sidelines and bitches. "One of these days we're gonna get really, really mad!"
You mean the dhimmicrat party.

My maternal grandmother was named Gish and was Lillian’s and Dorothy’s first cousin. Lillian published a photo album in the early ‘70. I met her and got a copy autographed to my mother at Joske’s department store in Houston.
I went to a screening of The Wind (by Victor Sjostrum, not Griffith) one afternoon that was being shown by the great film historian Kevin Brownlow who would reconstruct the 1925 Napoleon. Before it began, we heard a voice and lo and behold Miss Gish walks in and takes a seat. Brownlow turned to the audience and exclaimed: “I’m showing Camille next week - maybe Garbo will show up!”
Both Miss Gish and Garbo lived on the eastside of NY - as did I.
Glad you enjoyed Night of the Hunter - an underrated classic. There is a very good documentary on the making of the movie out there - I saw it at Film Forum about 5 years ago. You see Laughton in action and/or hear his voice instructing actors.
Thanks - I’ll try to find the documentary - it’s sad that “Night of the Hunter” is the only film Laughton ever directed - I would like to have seen what else he might have come up with - supposedly he was disappointed with how poorly the movie did at the box office, thinking the public didn’t like it, and vowed never to make another film - ironic if my own experience is any indication of what happened - after seeing the previews which played on the dark, scary elements of the movie, I was not eager to see it and didn’t brave watching until a few years ago - maybe Laughton did such a good job of directing this as a thriller that he scared people away and did himself out of the credit he deserved for a really enchanting work.....
It’s a very scary movie! Very dark but with distinctly Christian overtones. Laughton used to tour the country using readings from the Bible, Shakespeare, of course, and Jack Kerouac. I have a record of his performance.
Mitchum’s most frightening performance. Brilliant. Thanks to Miss Gish, the movie redeems itself. We abide and we endure.
