I saw the previews for "Night of the Hunter" when it was first released in 1955 and found the film so creepy that I vowed I would never see it - and I didn't until about five years ago when it came on TV one night and, feeling particularly brave, I decided to watch - by the end of the opening credits and Lillian Gish's brief monologue floating softly in space surrounded by her children, I was hooked - she was marvelous throughout (as in this closing They abide and they endure) - and the movie itself is a magical one of a kind fairy tale for adults - people who allow their ideological needs to get in the way of appreciating and enjoying good culture as this scold does deserve to be as miserable as they seem.....

Glad you enjoyed Night of the Hunter - an underrated classic. There is a very good documentary on the making of the movie out there - I saw it at Film Forum about 5 years ago. You see Laughton in action and/or hear his voice instructing actors.
