I saw the previews for "Night of the Hunter" when it was first released in 1955 and found the film so creepy that I vowed I would never see it - and I didn't until about five years ago when it came on TV one night and, feeling particularly brave, I decided to watch - by the end of the opening credits and Lillian Gish's brief monologue floating softly in space surrounded by her children, I was hooked - she was marvelous throughout (as in this closing
They abide and they endure) - and the movie itself is a magical one of a kind fairy tale for adults - people who allow their ideological needs to get in the way of appreciating and enjoying good culture as this scold does deserve to be as miserable as they seem.....
