Essential California: Remembering Harvey Milk in the age of Pete Buttigieg
LA Times ^ | 5/22/19 | Julia Wick

It’s hard to conceive of just how monumental Milk’s 1977 election was in 2019 terms. Openly LGBT individuals have now held some form of elected office in all 50 states, the last midterm election brought a “a rainbow wave” of advancements, and Pete Buttigieg, who is gay, is in the field of contenders for the 2020 Democratic nomination.

But the late 1970s were a time of radical gay activism and conservative crusades. This was the age of Anita Bryant’s “Save Our Children” campaign and the Briggs Initiative, a California ballot measure that would have banned gays and lesbians from teaching in public schools.

Beswick described how he recently took Chasten Buttigieg, the husband of the presidential candidate, on a tour of the [GLBT Museum in San Franciso's Castro District]. The two men paused in front of the suit. “In that moment, I was just thinking about giving him a brief look at Harvey Milk,” Beswick remembered. But when he stepped back to allow Buttigieg to listen to the recording, he recalls thinking, “Ah, what did I just do.”

“I could see the tears in his eyes and I was thinking, he’s got to be thinking about the risk that his husband is taking, even by running for president,” Beswick said, explaining that although San Francisco is “a bit of a queer cultural bubble,” that isn’t the case in the rest of the country.

After Buttigieg finished listening to the recording, he turned to Beswick and said, “This is why we do what we do.”

California is where they excoriate the Franciscan friars who founded the place while celebrating a child molester like Harvey Milk. That state is shaping the moral tone of the nation. Mayor Pete might not win right away, but win he (and his kind) surely will.

Anita Bryant was prescient. It’s not as if she was wrong, they are openly recruiting children today.

What unaffected sophistry. Every politician faces a certain amount of risk from one Twinkies addled psycho or another.

He eulogized Jim Jones.

He was a de facto pedophile.

He has been rewarded with a local holiday, a postage stamp, and a naval vessel all being dedicated to immortalizing his name.

The immoral of the story: Live a righteous life, and be quickly forgotten.

I’m sure Buttplug is personally well-acquainted with San Francisco’s grotesquely perverted gay bath houses—where anonymous sex rages 24/7, 365 days per year.

It's not all morals.

It's also sticking with the PC bible. You can't publish negative stories about people who belong to protected classes, whether racial, religious, ethnic, disabled or sexual.

So the State of California honored Harvey Milk as some kind of hero, by virtue of his being elected to political office and his subsequent murder.

What was not known about Harvey Milk, suppressed by the media and San Francisco police, was his friendship with Jim Jones, of the People's Temple and Jonestown, who assigned members of his cult to assist Milk in his campaign for Supervisor.

A book about all this that took Daniel Flynn most of a decade to research and write was published last October by ISI. A synopsis can be found here but it's not likely there will be any mention in the LA Times, ever.

PC rules.
