New York Times executive admits media didn't 'understand the Trump phenomenon'

New York Times Executive Editor Dean Baquet spoke candidly last weekend about how the media "did not quite understand the Trump phenomenon" during the 2016 election.

In an interview conducted by the International News Media Association, Baquet was asked about a letter to readers that he and Publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. wrote days after the historic election of Donald Trump.

"After such an erratic and unpredictable election there are inevitable questions: Did Donald Trump’s sheer unconventionality lead us and other news outlets to underestimate his support among American voters? What forces and strains in America drove this divisive election and outcome?

Most important, how will a president who remains a largely enigmatic figure actually govern when he takes office?" Baquet and Sulzberger wrote. "As we reflect on the momentous result, and the months of reporting and polling that preceded it, we aim to rededicate ourselves to the fundamental mission of Times journalism. That is to report America and the world honestly, without fear or favor, striving always to understand and reflect all political perspectives and life experiences in the stories that we bring to you."

Baquet insisted his letter wasn't an "apology," but rather an "acknowledgment of something important."

“It was an acknowledgment that the American press … did not quite understand the Trump phenomenon," Baquet said. "Nobody in my newsroom — nobody in front of me — said that they thought Donald Trump could win."

Baquet said the staff underestimated the impact the economy had on voters and "how much anger there was" in the U.S.

"My goal now is to understand that," he said. "And I already think we’ve done a better job. I think we’ve come a long way.”

"And I already think we've done a better job. I think we've come a long way."

Yes, clearly, the NYT understands now, and is, as it has always been, full of crap.

The Lyin’ NYT has been on the Leftist bandwagon since President Woodrow Wilson’s era. They were pro-Soviet, pro-Castro, pro-Democrat, and crazy about Obama. They will never change because their religion is Socialism/Communism.

There were really that many?

I was able to attend only 1, but I think I watched nearly all the rest.

And sort of disappointed when there were no more, suffered withdrawal.

Read the US Constitution.

Maybe they have read it, they can't comprehend it. Look at the Dems in the House; they think they control the Executive and Judicial branches of government. The New York Times needs to inform Pelosi that Congress can't act as if they have judicial control by issuing subpoenas - the Attorney General's office is part of the Executive branch. The Dems want to control way more than what the US Constitution says is theirs to control, and it's only part of the House because they don't control the Senate.

Democrats read, but are too stupid to understand the US Constitution.

This editor’s comments are a pack of lies. The nihilists at the nyt understood very well what the election was about and they did everything they could to defeat America. Fortunately, they lost.

You nailed it. It is not a phenomenon, it is the realization by many voters they have been getting hosed by the deep state for decades.

The rallies have never stopped ... just slowed down after the campaign season ended. I went to two of them after Election Day ... one in late 2016 and another last year. There was one in northern Pennsylvania just last night, too.

Gee...thanks for that brilliant insight. We never would have guessed.

Good thing you’ve been so fair and balanced and all since the election. Also a good thing you stuck with a flaming racist to y’know help dissipate all that anger in the country. Brilliant as always Racist New York Times.

"New York Times Executive Editor Dean Baquet spoke candidly last weekend about how the media "did not quite understand the Trump phenomenon" during the 2016 election."

The key is in those places you fly over Dean.

And by the way, the people in those places know what you think about them.

Maybe Dean you should stop off in one of those places and tell them what you really think. Claim you're from DC on a listening tour. That just might get you by for now.

It's too bad there's not some group that could hire people to go out and 'speak to the people' - find out what they're thinking and feeling and why...

If a group like that existed they could write up their findings and distribute the information to citizens. Would't it be nice to have a group like that? If we had such a group the idiot Dean Baquet wouldn't be so clueless.

In simple terms, there were three elements to journalistic ‘confusion’ over Trump’s win:

1. They were living in a vacuum, and consumed only ‘Hillary-air’. In their heart, she was Jesus Christ/MLK/JFK and Obama all rolled-up into one.

2. These journalists hadn’t been out of their element....talking to real people (working-class types) since they left college. The days of a CBS Charles Kuralt-type crossing the country in an RV and discussing topics with humble people, have come and gone.

3. The journalistic belief in their intellectualism, and that they are smarter than most everyone else is more than obvious.

“Most important, how will a president who remains a largely enigmatic figure actually govern when he takes office”

ROTFLOL!

there was NOTHING “enigmatic” about Trump: he was the most transparent Presidential candidate in history of the U.S.: he repeatedly said what he was going to do and why, never deviated from his stances regardless of the audience, and then when he was elected, proceeded to carry out his plethora of promises to the best of his ability, with zero help from Congress, the media, or anyone else ...

Trump was, and is, a titan amongst men

Calling it the “Trump phenomenon” shows that they still don’t really get it.

The New York Times doesn’t understand that their propaganda doesn’t work anymore.
Real America lives in a different world than the upside down one they try to sell.
