Ford Motor Co said on Monday it will eliminate about 10% of its global salaried workforce, cutting about 7,000 jobs by the end of August as part of its larger restructuring in a move that will save the No. 2 automaker $600 million annually.
Ford Chief Executive Officer Jim Hackett said in an email to employees that the cuts include both voluntary buyouts and layoffs, and a spokesman added it freezes open positions as well. About 2,300 of the affected people are employed in the United States, the spokesman said.
To succeed in our competitive industry, and position Ford to win in a fast-changing future, we must reduce bureaucracy, empower managers, speed decision making, focus on the most valuable work and cut costs, Hackett said in the email.
Ford has been restructuring its operations globally to improve profitability and speed product development, making or announcing cuts in Europe, South America and Russia.

Rollover and side impact regulations dictate the beltline and bed side heights. Those will not be coming down any time soon.
However, are you aware that Ford has a fold out tailgate step and handhold specifically to help with this problem? https://youtu.be/0lRdig2hlog
The Democrats also sold the American workers out. Remember Gore debating the "benefits" of free trade with Ross Perot. Perot warned of the giant sucking sound while Gore threw a bunch of BS statistics out there (IIRC), and everyone said Gore won that debate. I wonder how many lost their jobs as a result.
You can also blame the consumers who chose price over the Made in USA label. They made the exact same choice as the companies that shipped the jobs out, and in doing so made it profitable to ship those jobs out.
Having said that, I agree with you about the GOP also selling us out.
Gas here is over $3/gal and people thought sub $2.50/gal was going to last forever. Already hearing everyone who dumped their cars for SUV's bitching about fuel prices.
I've driven an SUV since 1996 so I don't complain about the gas prices. I knew what I was doing when I bought mine - my driving requirements are typically far more minimal than most other folks so rising gas prices are taking a bite out of their budgets.
Again, already hearing the whining when I stop for gas once every few weeks and they've been whining awhile already.
As someone who's never owned anything other than a GM or Jeep vehicle, I agree with you.
I own two vehicles: a 2003 GMC Envoy Denali that I use for pulling a trailer on occasion and for winter driving.
My 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee is my daily driver otherwise.
I don't buy foreign vehicles. (Yes, I know it's FIAT-JEEP now -- it's still a damn' good vehicle made here in the good old US of A.)
Well, they could lower them some, anyway.
They can’t. Federal side impact laws dictate the height - and people stopped buying stepsides years ago.
The only way around it would be to build a smaller truck, and you can already go buy a smaller truck anyway.
most of the job losses are in Europe due to Ford’s loss making business here.
Though for the life of me I don’t understand why they are loss-making (I haven’t really researched it) - they make good, popular cars like the Ford Focus and Mondeo that are very common here in Poland.
When you factor in all the middle men and markup and profit taking the savings are nil to the end customer. Add in little or no quality control and defective products that have to be replaced the cost actually went up.
And that's not all. Remember those stimulus checks from about 12 years ago? Nice gesture, but everything we could buy with it was made in China. The money bounced around retail for a while but ended up back in China. We ended up paying them twice, once when we bought the products, and again when we paid back the money we borrowed for the stimulus checks in the first place.
