Will 'Whiteshift' Save America From Ethnic Strife?
Right and Free ^ | May 17, 2019 | Michael Barone

If you've been paying any attention at all to journalism in recent years — maybe not a good idea, but if you have — you surely have noticed those stories predicting, often with a certain relish, that the United States is about to become a majority-minority country.

Such predictions, as the Obama administration Census Bureau director noted in 2014, "made demographic change look like a zero-sum game that white Americans were losing." Such fears contributed to Donald Trump's election in 2016. No one wants to vote for the side that seems to be saying, "Hurry up and die."

But are those trends so inevitable? Not necessarily, writes political scientist Eric Kaufmann, a Canadian who teaches in Britain and is of Jewish, Chinese and Latino ancestry. His most recent book is called "Whiteshift," which he defines as "the mixture of many non-whites into the white group through voluntary assimilation."

As he points out, something like this has happened before. A hundred years ago, Catholic, Orthodox and Jewish immigrants pouring into Ellis Island were considered to be of different "races" by white Anglo-Saxon Protestant elites.

Half a century ago, their descendants were regarded as still culturally and politically distinctive in Nathan Glazer and Daniel Patrick Moynihan's description of New York ethnic groups in "Beyond the Melting Pot." A "balanced" ticket in those days had to include Irish, Italian and Jewish candidates.

Today, all these groups are lumped together as "whites," even though there are still perceptible, though muted, differences in political attitudes and perspectives between those with different ancestries.

Ponch was apparently the only CHP officer who had a partner in the show.

Never thought much about that until you said that.

If someone had Brianne Leary (beautiful brunette officer in first years) or Randi Oakes (blonde officer later) they would have had storylines on harassment all year. Oh, those hours and hours of stakeouts. ((Now guys will Google their names for images. ))

I almost stopped watching when a documentary quoted "We are the only cop show in history where we never pulled our guns We started to but never did all that time."...

I may go back to SWAT and the Untouchables.

He has the hair of a chia pet and if he could pass,
he’d be a chia-white.

No, they were not considered different races. There have been people from all three of these groups in America since at least the Revolution. This is a variant of the “Irish weren’t considered white”

_____________

there was a time when the word race also meant ethnic origin.

This is only true if you claim “hispanics” not an ethnic group, are not White. You’d have to claim this even though many of them are.....y’know......White.

My best friend’s cousin married a former cheerleader for our university (the lucky bastage). She’s blonde haired and blue eyed and looks like Hitler’s perfect aryan ideal - certainly more than I do. Her dad is from Indiana. She was born in and grew up in the states. Oh but her mom....her mom you see is Venezuelan. Oh sure she is upper class Venezuelan and her family may have been from frikkin’ Scandanavia for all I know but because of that, the daughter counts as “hispanic”.

Take a wild guess which box their kids are going to check. Why the hell would you check White when hispanic brings you benefits like easier admissions and potentially scholarships while White does not?

My niece just married a guy from Chile. His family was from Spain several generations ago. Admittedly, he does have a little bit of a Mediterranean complexion though he’s certainly a lot less swarthy than a lot of other ethnic Southern Europeans I’ve seen. Obviously their kids are going to check the “hispanic” box too - they’d be fools to do otherwise.

Of course in both of the instances I outlined, they’re all....y’know.....White. And they’d all tell you that too. That describes many of the “hispanics” in the US. Leftists are just so obsessed with being anti-White that they have to make up a whole separate category for people who are White to try to claim that they’re not.

Well, it’s a little-spoken of truth that 29% of Hispanics voted for Trump. And I think it’ll be even higher in 2020.

SWAT was a great 70s show. Horribly dated now but I love the series and have both seasons on DVD.

Untouchables is classic. It is a law enforcement fairy tale but done very well. I also have the boxed set. Some great cue and incidental music also.

It took ME-TV to appreciate Untouchables. I vaguely remember reruns as a 70s kid.

When CHiPs reran on ME way back when and I actually paid attention to what was going on in each episode, it was almost too painful to watch.

Maybe it’s just me, but I “see” everyone (Asians, Latinos, Natives, folks from the middle East, etc.) as white, with the exception of Africans. I see those of African heritage as non-white. I never think of people as “brown”, but rather just a darker skinned white person. Weird, I know.

Never considered it before, but I’m the same way.

In my hometown (a midsize industrial city in the Great Lakes region) in my parents' lifetime, a Polish/German couple was considered a "mixed marriage."

Likewise between Catholics and Protestants until the late 60s. I grew up listening to that around the holiday table, as the relatives were also either Democrat or Republican according to their respective religions.

I imagine the stats will get a little weird, as many ambitious light skinned Hispanics and Asians are now marking themselves down as white.

Many Hispanics are white or mostly white, if they are mostly Spaniard-descended as distinct from mostly Indian-descended. it's not like they are trying to "pass" or anything.

Race is an inexact indicator of anything. Background and culture are more reliable, but nothing is set in stone. People's attitudes, access to scriptural learning and determination are the main sources of their happiness and adjustment.

Erik Estrada lives 100 miles north of me in Ashton, Idaho. He works as a police officer in town and locals enjoy having him as a new member of the town community.

I met him at probably the last DragonCon I went to.

He was there and a few of us were talking with him. Seemed like a good fellow.
