Ted Weems is best known for “Heartaches,” the 1931 release that didn’t become a hit until 1946. This recording is significant because that’s the young, unknown Perry Como, “the singing barber,” handling vocal duties. He would become a star after the war and act as mentor to Tony Bennett.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

HAROLD ARLEN

“WHEN THE SUN COMES OUT”

The rest of this weekend is dedicated to this classic. The song was not attached to any particular show. Harold teamed with his old partner, Ted Koehler from the Cotton Club days, for the lyrics. The tune is very bluesy, and it sounds like something that could have originated at the club. This was the hit version from 1941. That’s Helen O’Connell handling vocal duties.

Good evening, mountainlion...are you covered in snow?

We had a HUGE thunder storm last evening, with pouring rain. Only lasted about an hour, but thunder is so very rare. Everywhere around us I could see blue sky as the rain pounded down. It even hailed.

I can imagine an artillery guy needing lots of volume. LOL!
