Trump Administration Pulls $1B For California High-Speed Rail Project

SACRAMENTO (AP) — The Trump administration cancelled nearly $1 billion in federal money for California’s high-speed rail project Thursday, further throwing into question the future of the ambitious plan to connect Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The Federal Railroad Administration’s announcement it would not give California the money came several months after sniping between President Donald Trump and Gov. Gavin Newsom over the project. The administration will still try to force California to return another $2.5 billion that has already been spent.

Trump had seized on Newsom’s remarks in February that the project as planned would cost too much and take too long. Newsom has shifted the project’s immediate focus to a 171-mile line in the state’s Central Valley, but he said he’s still committed to building the full line.

One suspects that everyone (including Mister Jerry Brown and Mister Gavin Newsom) knows that the project was sold to voters on a mountain of lies; and, that aside from being a pork feast for unions and other Dem pals, the (ha ha ) "bullet" train will never travel a fraction of an inch.

However, one highly suspects that if Brown or Newsom ever ADMIT the truth (obvious as it is) then they become liable for legal action and even greater public ridicule.

The answer (as best that I can guess) is that they suspend most funding, and PRETEND that it's still a viable project (which is never even was. Ever.)

Newsom's biggest worry?

That would be a California ballot measure that called for a thorough and timely audit of every penny, and an investigation that would names names.

Politicians would let that money go because it was already "spent".

But Trump's a businessman. He's going to want that money back if the project's not going through. Spend it somewhere else in his budget.

democRAT hi-speed train projects are ALL slush-fund boondoggles anyway.

Looks like CA will have to re-purpose the little bit of railroad to a bike path or something. The bridges can keep a bunch of homeless people under them.

A high-speed rail from Los Angeles to Las Vegas might have been something worth having. All lanes on I-15 are solid cars from LA to LV on Friday night, and LV to LA on Sunday night.

Funny you should mention this. My son lives in Santa Monica, about a mile or maybe a little more from the famous pier.

A few years ago they built a train to bring people to the pier - good for tourism, don’t you know.

Turns out, UNEXPECTEDLY, it was also good for crime, which has gone up a lot in that area as crooks now have an easy way to get to all those tourists and then disappear again.

...

Good. I was wondering what happened to that.

Most of the initial $2.5B was spent buying right of way land. Diane Feinstein’s husband, Richard Blum, was the recipient of most of those $’s.
