Alabama lawmakers have passed a bill to outlaw abortion outright in the state, set to be the strictest such US law.
The state Senate approved the law, rejecting an amendment to allow exemptions for cases of rape or incest.
It will now go to Republican Governor Kay Ivey. She has not said whether she will sign it, but she is seen as a strong opponent of abortion.
Activists hope it will challenge a landmark 1973 Supreme Court ruling that legalised abortion in the US.
The bill had been passed 74-3 earlier this month in Alabama's House of Representatives.
Abortion would be only be allowed in certain circumstances to safeguard the mother's health.
What are the politicians saying about the new law?
Republican lawmaker Terri Collins, sponsor of the legislation, said: "Our bill says that baby in the womb is a person."
Democratic state Senator Bobby Singleton said the bill "criminalises doctors" and is an attempt by men "to tell women what to do with their bodies".
Republican Senator Clyde Chambliss, a backer of the law, said it would enable the state "to go directly to the Supreme Court to challenge Roe versus Wade", the 1973 ruling that established a woman's right to an abortion.
Before the debate began, Democrat Rodger Smitherman said: "We're telling a 12-year-old girl who, through incest and rape is pregnant, we are telling her that she doesn't have a choice."
What does the bill do?
It goes further than legislation passed recently elsewhere in the US to ban abortion after a foetal heartbeat can be detected, usually around six weeks into a pregnancy.
Under the Alabama measure, provision of abortion at any stage in pregnancy would be a class A felony.
Doctors could face 10 years in prison for attempting to terminate a pregnancy and 99 years for

Will be struck down by a federal judge, appeals court will agree, and SCOTUS will refuse to hear the case. It’s too soon for this. Replace Ginsburg with a pro-life lady who can write the opinion and then Roberts and Kav might go along with the ride.
Good for us!
PS If there are any more threads about this, yáll have to ping yo’seves ~I’m heading to bed.
RBG isn’t the first sleeping beauty that sat on the SCOTUS. I remember my 11th grade history teacher telling us young skulls full of mush that William O.Douglas was known to take siestas during deliberations. Even though Douglas was hopelessly liberal I can’t help but wonder if Roe v Wade would’ve turned out differently had he been just a little more attentive?
God bless!
Under what "certain circumstances" is it OK to murder an innocent unborn baby? Is a child less deserving of life because of the circumstances of his or her conception?
The rapist doesn't even get the death penalty-- why should the innocent child?
Why? Should the "circumstances" of how a pregnancy started determine whether or not a human life can keep on living? Why should the innocent child be executed because her/his father was a criminal? Is that reasonable?
I couldn't help but notice your screen name is eerily like "Moloch" the biblical name of a Canaanite god associated with child sacrifice. Coincidence, I'm sure.
I noticed the name similarity, too.
Funny how the supporters of abortion always resort to extreme cases to defend their position. When what they really desire is baby murdering factories for profit.
Abortion, the murder of a child by their very own mother is the purest form of evil.
And they say that white men are the most notorious serial killers. Hardly.
Stand strong Alabama
Hopefully we have given you something to think about whenever you do want to go there.
So, what is Allysa Milano going to do now?
Demand no one in Alabama has sex?
The "we" is, of course, the other people on this thread who have already disputed the faulty premise that HOW a child is conceived determines whether or not he/she has worth and is permitted to live. As for "appreciating" other opinions on this topic, I haven't disputed that someone might disagree with me, just that I think they might change their minds if they heard a better argument. There is quite a bit of disinformation out there and I don't think anyone would disagree that making an INFORMED choice is always better.
