The proposal would raise the annual registration fee to $1,000, more than 57 times the current amount of $17.50.
Illinois officials believe the legislation will raise $2.4 billion for future projects, the major one being roadway improvement, according to the Chicago Tribune.
The bill would also make things more expensive for residents who drive non-electric cars. The state's gas tax would go up 19 cents to 44 cents a gallon, fees for drivers licenses would double and the registration fee for non-electric vehicles would go up nearly 50% from $98 to $148.
Its outrageous, Tesla owner Nicoletta Skarlatos, 56, told the Chicago Tribune. I thought Illinois was progressive and would want to encourage EV (electric vehicle) ownership.
The reason for the extreme hikes are that electric vehicles don't provide the state any gas tax revenue. Electric vehicle companies Tesla and Rivian say they're against the legislation.

.......
Counting your chickens before you break those eggs is guaranteed failure.
People will get rid of their electric cars in response to this foolish tax. Therefore, no tax dollars collected.
Who owns most of the electrical companies in Illinois?
Commonwealth Edison - Wikipedia

Commonwealth Edison, commonly known as ComEd, is the largest electric utility in Illinois, ... The company’s revenues total more than $15 billion annually. .... which now owns both Commonwealth Edison and Philadelphia-area utility PECO ...
Illinois will place a 2-3 Thousand $ transfer fee on any EV sold.
What a great way to incentivize people. LMAO.
You nailed it. Just another way to separate the taxpayer from their dollars.
Most states, federal and state gas taxes are close to enough to maintain the roads.
But lots of gas taxes go to other projects, such as mass transportation in cities.
In addition, politicians prefer to spend the gas taxes on new roads rather than maintenance.
Alabama is doing the same thing. They just raised the gas tax for the first time in a couple of decades, but electric vehicle owners are going to be expected to pony up, too, since they use the same roads and would not be hit by the gas tax.
Honestly, it balances the playing field: it’s a user tax, so if you’re gonna do it at all, you need to hit all of the users as equally as possible.
they can use this money to improve things for everyone, the environment and the children! Anyone against this is simply evil, hates children and the earth.
It only has one concern, raising taxes to pursue the expenditure figure.
First they said electric cars were great and gave them tax breaks. Now they want their tax money back.
Sweep them all out of office and into jail.
“But I thought virtue signalling wasn’t going to cost us anything...”
The boring monochromatic Left - whatever it takes for more and more of their life’s blood: government.
So $1,000 per year of electric vehicle tax would be the same as about 2,250 gallons of gas per year. Assuming 25 MPG, a gas user would need to accumulate 56,250 miles per year to pay the same amount of tax. Of course, since the electric car user has been getting away with zero gas tax in the past, you could consider the 1K price today to be catch-up for the taxes these people should have paid in the past.
Of you could also call it "Reparations." That term would make it popular with the influenced voters in Illinois who have turned the state blue.
Anything that would piss off a Prius owner is a good thing. Besides, the only Fair Tax is the tax that taxes you and not me.
Hypocrite Democrats trying to increase global warming so they can make more needless regulations.
Wow. First your state income tax exemption; then your subsidized transportation. Feelz bad FRen, real bad.
EV owners aren’t paying gas taxes that maintain roads. I recall saying this was gonna happen some years ago.
Between their sometimes direct subsidies to own, sometimes tax incentives, and freeloading on road maintenance cost I guess EV owners may start feeling out upon.
If I lived in Illinois, I would continue to, and encourage everyone to continue to elect democrats, marxists , socialists, and commies. You have the government you deserve! Enjoy!
Make you a deal...get a Prius and it’s only $500
#sarc
I think people who drive high mileage cars should have to pay a higher percent in gas taxes.
Chicago is the economic powerhouse driving the state. (This role has been played all over the world, there is no empire without cities.) It has provided the majority of income for the whole state since about 1860.
Chicago’s Outfit/Machine elects these thieves and Chicago pays the taxes for them. Those taxes go to the personnel the Outfit puts in place and wind up in the pockets of the Machine Demons.
For most of the City’s history the Wolves and Vultures have not destroyed the economic base they fed upon. Now it is just whack-a-doodle hatred and ignorance.
All the Chicago haters should consider that if Chicago goes down, the state goes down.
We need to understand the trend of the last 1500 yrs - the overall removal of people from the countryside to the cities. This means more and more power for cities. Republicans better figure our a way to get the cities’ votes or watch their minority shrink.
Eliminating Illegalism is the key to reducing Demon power. It was in 1850 and is still true.
