Minnesota Fifth District Rep. Ilhan Omar was only elected to Congress this past November, yet she seems to be effecting the Corbynization of the Democratic Party. That’s quite an accomplishment for a first-term congressman of no distinction other than her heavily advertised Islamic faith. What are we to make of her?
I’ve been observing Omar since she defeated 22-term incumbent state representative Phyllis Kahn in 2016 for the Democratic nomination to represent the district including Minneapolis’s “Little Mogadishu.” Omar’s rise lies at the intersection of immigration and Islam that is transforming the Democratic Party and, therewith, the United States. At a campaign stop in Minneapolis just before the 2016 election on November 6, then-candidate Donald Trump delivered the message in Minneapolis that we “have seen firsthand the problems with faulty refugee vetting, with large numbers of Somali refugees coming into your state, without your knowledge, without your support or approval.”
The 2016 election brought us Trump as president, of course, but it also brought Ilhan Omar to office. From her perch as a first term-member Democratic member of the Minnesota House of Representatives, Omar constituted little more than a political cipher. Yet she was already on her way to becoming an intergalactic superstar. I wrote about her in the City Journal columns ”The curious case Ilhan Omar” (September 9, 2016) and ”Ilhan Omar’s many firsts” (September 15, 2017).
In early 2018, documentary filmmaker Norah Shapiro celebrated Omar, declaring it was Time for Ilhan in the title of the movie telling the story of her rise to cipherhood in the Minnesota House. Yet Shariro, of course, was on to something. It was time for Ilhan in more ways than one.
On June 5, 2018, then Fifth District Rep. Keith Ellison announced that he was standing down from his bid for reelection to run for Minnesota Attorney General. Minnesota’s Fifth Congressional District is one of the most heavily Democratic in the country. Ellison’s withdrawal set off a race fo the Fifth District nomination on the Democratic side that heavily favored Omar and she quickly declared her intention to succeed Ellison. She easily won the party’s endorsement at the special DFL Fifth District endorsing convention held on June 17 and faced down four Democratic opponents in the August 14 primary to determine the party’s nominee. The Democratic primary was the real Fifth District election; Omar skated to victory over her nominal opponents in November, only six months ago.
At the Fifth District Democrats’ Special Endorsing Convention in Minneapolis on June 17, 2018, I saw Omar nominated by a millennial constituency weighted toward “all that dreary tribe of high-minded women and sandal-wearers and bearded fruit-juice drinkers who come flocking toward the smell of ‘progress’ like bluebottles to a dead cat,” as George Orwell described English socialists. The convention voters were thrilled by Omar’s occupation of the left-wing fringe of the Democratic Party.
Following Omar’s nomination at the Special Endorsing Convention, I publicized what I deduced to be Omar’s anti-Semitic views in the City Journal column ”A question for Democrats” (July 20, 2018). The question raised by Omar was whether her anti-Semitic views passed muster in the Democratic Party. I failed to elicit a response from the prominent Minnesota Democrats to whom I addressed the question. They all ducked. We have now seen the phenomenon replicated on a national scale. This is Ilhan Omar’s Democratic Party.
Despite its changing demographics, Minnesota’s Fifth District still includes a substantial Jewish population. Perhaps the most notable of the inner-ring suburbs is St. Louis Park, whose native sons include New York Times columnist Tom Friedman, former senator Al Franken, political scientist Norm Ornstein, Harvard philosopher Michael Sandel, filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen, and singer/songwriter Peter Himmelman. Many of the district’s Jewish residents are active Democrats and Democratic voters; Omar’s views about Israel were of of intense interest to them and other Democrats voting in the primary.
At the Beth El Synagogue DFL candidates’ forum on August 6, 2018, before a packed and heavily Jewish audience in St Louis Park — I was there — a week before the DFL primary, Omar obscured and denied her advocacy of the anti-Israel boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement for precisely one night. Promptly following her election, she reiterated her long-standing support of BDS. Omar knows precisely what she is doing. She lies baldly and without conscience.
I try not to take her anti-Semitism personally. She also hates the United States. I think this explains what is otherwise one of the most inexplicable features of her persona: her rank ingratitude to the country that took her in as a refugee from an African hellhole. Despite the fact that Omar was welcomed to the United States as a teenager from a Kenyan refugee camp, she is a bottomless fount of grievances against the United States. She has expertly assimilated to American culture by adopting the mantle of the victim. She is a pure creature of identity/victim politics.
The red-green alliance embodied by Omar has both Israel and the United States in its sights. With the immigration spigot open and overflowing, Omar’s rise within the Democratic Party makes her look like nothing so much as the wave of the future.
This won’t become a new trend if the Democratic Party is destroyed first.

Ilhan Omar, who has made numerous anti-Semtic and anti-America remarks, bragged that she is President Trump’s “biggest nemesis.” Omar boasted, “This is a president who has come to power because he was very much willing to vilify and demonize immigrants and refugees. He so proudly said we should halt Muslims from entering our country. He clearly has a disdain for black women who see themselves as equal to him. And so, for many people, it’s not a surprise that he finds his biggest nemesis in me.
Clearly, I am a nightmare; because he can’t stop really thinking about ways that he can continue to use my identity to marginalize our communities.” She added, “As someone who certainly has survived far worse people than him, I’m going to be alright … I always find conflicts to be the best sources for organizing.” Omar told The Huffington Post that the constituents in her community who voted for her have not changed their opinion of her despite the remarks she has made, crowing, “People who were actually willing to cast their ballot for me have not ever called or asked, ‘Why can’t you say things differently?’”
Omar positioned herself as a champion of the oppressed: “There are people who really have never felt completely visible in a system that wasn’t designed for them. And people who have always felt that the American dream was dying away. To now see [that] a refugee who has only been in this country two decades, who carries almost every marginalized identity that you could carry, has risen and ascended to one of the most powerful positions that you could be in our country? That is hope.” Speaking to a group of women in her district, she posited that people who have “taken on AIPAC” “have not returned,” blustering, “There are people who are invested in instilling fear in us. There are people who send me books of members of Congress who have taken on AIPAC and others and who have not returned. I think it is for them in their mind to be a cautionary tale. But for me, it’s a motivation. It’s a motivation to say that somebody has to buck the system.”
She stated, “Yesterday, you were saying that Muslim men don’t allow women to speak, and Muslim women are oppressed for being covered, so you want to liberate them. Today you’re angry because there is one of them that is too liberated. These people really are not sincere in their criticism. All they really, truly want is for us to go away.”
Omar concluded to The Huffington Post, “There are these people, these forces who are very much interested in making sure that this immigrant, this refugee, this woman of color, this Muslim ― who naively thinks that she must have some sort of equal status to them ― must be put in her place. The joke is on them. Because that is never going to happen.”

Since 2007, federal government agencies have handed over $47 million to 61 Islamic institutions in the forms of 411 various grants and contracts.
In total, if the government’s own data is accurate, at least $41 million was given to institutions either controlled or under the partial influence of the Muslim Brotherhood, Jamaat-e-Islami (a violent South Asian Islamist movement), Salafis, Deobandis (a hardline South Asian Sunni sect from which the Taliban was created) and the Iranian regime, among others.
Some of the largest amounts involve grants to aid charities. Long favored by Islamist movements as a means to spread ideology through welfare, charities also provide extremists with plentiful funding and the occasional accompanying
credibility of government partnership.
The Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), for instance, received over $10 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for disaster relief work in 2016 and 2018. ICNA is the U.S. representative body of Jamaat-e-Islami, which was recently banned by the Indian government in the Kashmir region because of its involvement with “extremism and militancy in Jammu and Kashmir and elsewhere.”

Fox 9 television uncovers a far-reaching scandal: last year, more than $100 million in cash left the Twin Cities airport in carry-on luggage, bound for the Middle East and Africa: This story begins at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, where mysterious suitcases filled with cash have become a common carry-on. On the morning of March 15, Fox 9 chased a tip about a man who was leaving the country. Sources said he took a carry-on bag through security that was packed with $1 million in cash. Travelers can do that, as long as they fill out the proper government forms. Fox 9 learned that these cloak-and-dagger scenarios now happen almost weekly at MSP. The money is usually headed to the Middle East, Dubai and points beyond. Sources said last year alone, more than $100 million in cash left MSP in carry-on luggage.
Where does the money come from, and where is it going? It was coming from Hawalas, businesses used to courier money to countries that have no official banking system. Some immigrant communities rely on Hawalas to send funds to help impoverished relatives back home.
[Former Seattle police detective Glen] Kerns discovered some of the money was being funneled to a Hawala in the region of Somalia that is controlled by the al Shabaab terrorist group.
But the real scandal is where the money came from in the first place–welfare fraud:As Kerns dug deeper, he found that some of the individuals who were sending out tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of remittance payments happened to be on government assistance in this country. How could they possibly come up with such big bucks to transfer back home? “We had sources that told us, ‘It’s welfare fraud, it’s all about the daycare,’” said Kerns. *** Five years ago the Fox 9 Investigators were first to report that daycare fraud was on the rise in Minnesota, exposing how some businesses were gaming the system to steal millions in government subsidies meant to help low-income families with their childcare expenses.
“It’s a great way to make some money,” Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said In order for the scheme to work, the daycare centers falsely signed up low income Somali Muslim families that qualify for child care assistance funding.Surveillance videos from a case prosecuted by Hennepin County show parents checking their kids into a center, only to leave with them a few minutes later. Sometimes, no children would show up.
Either way, the center would bill the state for a full day of childcare.Video from that same case shows a man handing out envelopes of what are believed to be kickback payments to parents who are in on the fraud. Evidently welfare fraud in various forms is widespread in Minnesota’s Somali immigrant community. This is, I think, generally known, but the scale of fraud disclosed here is astonishing:
“We believe that there’s a scope of fraud out there that we really need to get our arms around and ensure that those dollars are going to kids that really need them,” Acting Commissioner for the Department of Human Services Chuck Johnson said.
He told the Fox 9 Investigators his agency has 10 daycares currently under active investigation for fraud. Fox 9 has learned dozens more are considered suspicious. Search warrants obtained by the Fox 9 Investigators show each one of the suspect centers has received several million dollars in childcare assistance funds.
According to public records and government sources, most are owned by Somali immigrants. *** Sources in the Somali community told Fox 9 it is an open secret that starting a daycare center is a license to make money.
The fraud is so widespread they said, that people buy shares of daycare businesses to get a cut of the huge public subsidies that are pouring in. Government insiders believe this scam is costing the state at least a hundred million dollars a year, half of all child care subsidies.
A friend who saw this news story wrote: This has me more angry than I’ve been since the 2011 tax increase on the “rich” aka, working families. I can’t put into words how utterly incompetent you must be to not have a checks and balances in place for tax payer funded programs, the tax payer dollars that people like myself and millions others diligently pay quarterly, leaving our children in childcare to work and provide for our families, pay taxes, only to have this hard work fund bogus programs that somehow are funding the same terrorist activities meant to harm our country?!!! Unbelievable. The commissioner and employees responsible for overseeing this mess should pay, every single one of them – they should be fired – they didn’t do their job.
Her outrage is appropriate, but perhaps misguided. I suspect that many of Minnesota’s liberals think that our bureaucrats performed their jobs very well: they siphoned off hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to finance liberal constituencies—the principal purpose of government, according to our lib friends.
So, how dumb are we? Honestly, I think it is impossible to plumb the depths of our stupidity. We need to totally revamp both our immigration policies and our welfare system to guard against these Somali migrant crooks.
