Gas taxes and driver's license fees would go up dramatically under Illinois Senate proposal

The cost of owning and operating a vehicle in Illinois would increase dramatically under a proposal in the state Senate aimed at paying for repairs to crumbling roads and bridges.

The legislation, introduced this week by Democratic Sen. Martin Sandoval of Chicago, would more than double the state’s gas tax to 44 cents a gallon, double the driver’s license fee to $60 and raise the vehicle registration fee to $148. The driver’s license fee is now $30; the vehicle registration fee is $98.

It also would significantly hike the registration fee for electric vehicles, from $17.50 to $1,000. Greater fuel efficiency and an increasing number of electric vehicles on the road has cut into the revenue available to the state to fix transportation infrastructure.

In addition, in an effort to provide a stable source of transportation funding, the gas tax and registration fees could continue to creep up every year under a formula tied to the rate of inflation.

...

Sandoval’s bill also includes provisions aimed at increasing the number of minority, female and veteran apprentices working on public infrastructure projects.

Maybe I won’t see so many Illinois tags in Kansas anymore. Although Kansas is start far more expensive than that in getting a car tagged.

During the campaign for governor last year, Pritzker floated the idea of charging an automobile tax by the mile, rather than per gallon. I guess cars have become so fuel efficient that it’s hurt tax revenues. Leave it to Democrats to find any possible thing to tax.

Taxpayers move out, tax dependents stay, sucking more and more money from the local, state governments. There is a limit.

I remember that the reason for buying these expensive cars was that their registration costs were significantly offset. This would seem to put a huge disincentive to buy the electric cars, which is true...FOR NOW.

You see, now that nobody is going to be buying these cars and, in fact, will be dumping them ASAP, the NEXT step for the government is to significantly INCREASE the cost for all gas vehicles as well in the next couple of years, just as intended when this stupid electric car scheme was foisted on everyone a decade ago.

Will wonders never cease.

Just like California the taxes might increase but the Democrats have no intention to use the money to fix the roads.

Democrats love playing silly games. The gasoline taxes will be stolen from roads & bridges to bike trails, Union run trains to nowhere...

The Unions will soon kickback cash (and free get out the vote campaigners) to benefit the democrat politicians

Democrats can hike taxes, spend the money on things other than what they SAID they were goin to spend it on then raise taxes AGAIN because they need the money to fix the same thing...and nobody catches on...amazing.

They’ll probably get a federal judge to put an injunction on the $1000 electric car registration fee, due to having a negative effect on global warming control.

“Greedy bastards!”

They are also proposing another $1/pack increase on cigarettes. The son’s of bitches have had my application and $150 CCL renewal fee since February and it’s still under review. So you don’t get any semblance of competance from this thoroughly rotten corrupt state.
