The Ultimate Federal Government Twitter Directory
FedTech ^ | 1/29/2014 | Jimmy Daly

"Federal agencies maintain hundreds of Twitter accounts. Wouldn't it be nice to have them all in one place? We sorted through this list of executive branch agencies, commissions and boards to assemble the most complete federal government Twitter directory available. It's not yet complete. If you notice an agency that's missing, let us know on Twitter so we can update it."

Here is a list of around 160 official US Government Twitter accounts. It is only partially current, and only through early 2014. There are probably many more today. I have not found a comparable list of US Government Facebook accounts, but it has to be enormous.

Why does the US Government use the service of a social media company that actively suppresses clearly political speech such as James Woods, Paul Watson, Milo, David Horowitz, Laura Loomer, Alex Jones and many others?

These are nearly all executive branch agencies. President Trump could issue an executive order immediately shutting down all executive branch Twitter and Facebook accounts, and forbidding phones and computers in his agencies from accessing Facebook or social media. Why should the US Government continue to patronize a business that deliberately silences purely political speech? Additionally, he can direct them to open official pages on some other platform that respects free speech. This would not be President Trump interfering with a private business. It would simply be a recognition that the US Government will not patronize you. Base commanders have had "off limits" lists for military personnel for decades. The executive branch needs an "off limits" list.

Thoughts?

Agreed. Trump should direct all IT services to block the domains in any federal office or infrastructure and network.

My daughter calls FR “old man facebook”!

But it seems like a quick and easy way to delegitimize social media companies and to bring the issue to the forefront without needing any cooperation from Congress.

Excellent idea! Should not be doing social media at work on work machines anyway. Especially governmental people.

Mmmmmmmm.....I can just hear Trump issuing the Ex/Order as we type......"no govt agency shall have an account on social media."

FYI----TRUMPS'S SOCIAL MEDIA HUD COMPLAINT NOW IN MOTION SAYS: Facebook mines extensive user data and classifies its users based on protected characteristics. Facebook’s ad targeting tools then invite advertisers to express unlawful preferences by suggesting discriminatory options. Among those options are physical disabilities, parents with children and even religious practices — advertisers are allowed to show their ads only to people Facebook deems interested in “Jesus” or the “Christian Church,” for example. Those practices could violate the Civil Rights Act, HUD said in the complaint, dated August 13.

Just wish I had the slightest idea how to get an idea like that into the right hands.

That’s a great thing to add on to it. The mere fact that HUD is pursuing actions against Facebook indicates that HUD should not have a Facebook page. It bolsters the case

Tell her that FR doesn’t spy on anyone like Facebook does.

PING.  I certainly like the spirit of this idea, DesertRhino.

There needs to be a strong separation between the official business of a Federal agency and the advocacy we are increasingly seeing from bureaucrats who feather the nest of the Permanent State.

An elected politician is expected to have a political/social position, but a bureaucrat fills an official capacity and should not have a political opinion voiced through social media.

Many issues to work out here.  For example, the Post Office, within limits, should have the right to advocate stamps because advertising builds confidence in the institution of the Post Office. And through advertising, the Post Office can better build its economic scale.

A manufacturer uses marketing to create a large enough base of customers so it can lower costs, improve service for the larger benefit.

More thinking is needed to flesh this idea out. We the People deserve greater control over the extent to which social media -- and all advocacy and advertising -- should play in our Government.

Only an ignorant individual would tolerate doing business with a corporation who would attempt to ‘change their habits’.

Not only should government terminate their ‘social’ accounts, MFM outlets should do so as well. Every Tom Dick and Harry we see in the screened alphabet soup has their own account with these ‘folks’. Government has their own web sites, as do the MFM. How are they so special they feel the need for more. It is certainly NOT to interact with their constituents (they could care less what we think).

“For example, the Post Office, within limits, should have the right to advocate stamps because advertising builds confidence in the institution of the Post Office. “

I still wouldn’t allow it unless social media straightens out their act. Close every single government Facebook and Twitter page. No exceptions.

We wouldn’t let the Post Office put ads in the KKK newspaper or hustler magazine, no matter *how* it helped their bottom line. A new freedom loving option for social media will emerge. You have to close one door before another one opens.

"...Why does the US Government use the service of a social media company that actively suppresses clearly political speech..."

Why indeed. Personally, I do not use social media (assuming FR does not constitute "social media") and I am not an advocate of having government involved in who can say what online...with one caveat: there should be the same freedom of speech online that is guaranteed in the Constitution.

Basically, I am not in favor of limiting speech, but I am in favor of guaranteeing speech...with all the inherent aspects that some people dislike in freedom of speech.

Thanks for posting, good point for discussion.
