AG Bill Barr: 'I'm Concerned' the Steele Dossier Was Part of Russia's Disinformation Campaign
PJMedia.com ^ | May 1, 2019 | Tyler O'Neil

On Wednesday, [May 1, 2019] Attorney General William Barr testified that he is “concerned” about the Trump-Russia dossier compiled by former British spy Christopher Steele and paid for by the Democratic National Committee and the Hillary Clinton campaign.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) asked Barr whether or not the Department of Justice (DOJ) could confirm that the Steele dossier was not part of the disinformation campaign Russia used to interfere in the 2016 presidential election.

“How do we know that the Steele dossier is not itself evidence of the Russian disinformation campaign, knowing what we know now that basically the allegations made therein were second-hand, hearsay, or unverified,” Cornyn stated, referring to key claims in the dossier that the report from Special Counsel Robert Mueller disproved, such as the claim that Trump lawyer Michael Cohen traveled to Prague.

“Can you state with confidence that the Steele dossier was not part of the Russian disinformation campaign?” Cornyn asked.

“No, I can’t state that with confidence and that is one of the areas that I’m reviewing,” Barr replied. “I’m concerned about it and I don’t think it’s entirely speculative.”

If Russia had a hand in the Steele dossier, that would imply that Hillary Clinton’s campaign and the DNC either worked with Russians or were duped by the Russians in their disinformation campaigns.

It would mean that the real “collusion” with Russia may have been on the Clinton side, rather than the Trump side.

I’d bet on it.

I would too. He's not the kind of man who uses language casually. Probably not ever much less in a senate hearing.

[Not all, or even most, of the pro-Russia people here are likely paid trolls, but some surely must be. We know that they were (and are still) out there in force, and so why wouldn’t they infest a large popular site like this one. ]

While there are people on the Russian payroll, I expect a good number are some combo of low-information right-wingers, ethnic Russians or Slavs drawn to Russia’s defense out of ethnic affinity, as well as others generically hostile to American foreign policy because it conflicts with what they perceive to be the interests of their home country (i.e. Arabs, Orthodox Christians, Latin Americans, et al). White supremacists and white identity groups have taken to Putin for some strange reason, despite the fact that he, like the tsars before him, is basically an empire-builder who has no issues embracing new subjects/citizens of any race, ethnicity or religion as long as they are productive and don’t mount a revolt against him. Russia is taking in hordes of Central Asians who are basically a mix of Mongol, Indian and Persian, and Muslim in the bargain.

It is not difficult to “spot” the Putin trolls. They always defend, excuse or promote the Russian propaganda.

Great post.

“That means he has evidence that it was part of a Russian disinfo campaign.”

he was CIA in the past. It meant to him it wasn’t worth arguing about, and he doesn’t have the stomach to get into how deep the British intel community was involved. Also, calling it out for the lie it is would mean taking on the US intel community. He isn’t going to do that either.

He also has nice things to say about Wray and Rosenstein. So he will stretch the truth when he must.

I think Barr is great for our side. But like Trump, there are simply limits to what they can do and positions they can take. Good enough for me that Barr is on our side.

But I think his version is only 75% if what actually happened. But that 75% is what we need most.

He has been AG for such a short period of time I don’t know how you could know what his “version” is going to be. I doubt that he has had time to assess the massive amounts of material he now has at hand and come up with a “version” of his own. That is pretty much what he has been saying too with various takes on “I’m looking into it.”

It makes all the sense in the world that the Russians would have (much) preferred a Hillary admin over a Trump-Pence one ...

Maybe. But why would I NOT expect Russia (or China, or many other foreign entities) to try and muck around with our election process? Or try and hack 'secret' information? - Which is why important State documents are supposed to be always kept using the latest security protocols - and those that flippantly disregard these rules should be punished.
I'd expect these foreign 'competitors' to seek advantages wherever they could gain one (e.g., sowing descent in our Country).
The problem was with the alleged Americans who broke all kinds of laws to gain political power - at the expense of upholding the United States, and the Constitution. Spying, and actively running a coup, in an attempt to overthrow an election, is the real crime. Those parties need to be punished.
I couldn't give two bits about Russians and Chinese intelligence playing their games. That is expected. Many members of the FBI, CIA, Media, State Department, etc - need to pay for their crimes against the Nation.

China got everything from Hillary’s server and shortly thereafter 20 of our intelligence assets in China disappeared. Clapper failed to do the requisite intelligence assessment that normally follows such occurrences.

There is every reason to believe that Russia and others “hacked” her server as well.

If Russia had a hand in the Steele dossier, that would imply that Hillary Clinton’s campaign and the DNC either worked with Russians or were duped by the Russians in their disinformation campaigns.

Hillary's campaign was not duped. She was already bought and paid for by Russia--of course she worked with them to fabricate dirt to use against Trump.

Re: Pence is dirty. Just a gut feel

There’s too much serious stuff on this thread to be sidetracked with stupidness like that.
