Secretary of State Mike Pompeo claimed Tuesday that embattled Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro was preparing to leave the country for Cuba, but was talked out of it by Russia.
"We've watched throughout the day, it's been a long time since anyone's seen Maduro," Pompeo said in an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer on "The Situation Room."
"He had an airplane on the tarmac, he was ready to leave this morning as we understand it and the Russians indicated he should stay."
"He was headed for Havana," Pompeo said.

The only people who dont want governmental change in Venezuela are people who are being rewarded by the present Venezuelan government.
I wonder how many American drug dealers benefit from working with and for the Maduro regime?
So we mess with him in Ukraine, and expect him to play nice in our backyard?
I guess you believe that Russians and Cubans and Venezuelan socialists don't get PTSD. Maybe it is because they don't have handwringers, or the have some sort of occult amulet to protect them that we lack.
Standing up against evil is hard? Who knew? You're like the elderly surrounded un bad neighborhoods with their windows barred up, who are either going to die by a stray bullet or burn up in an arson fire and all routes in or out are controlled by gangs. It's all just a matter of time.
My my my......
Fox News is reporting that the head of Venezuelas secret police has broken with Maduro.
Them Cubans better start swimming now if the want to get to Cuba by August.
Outstanding.
I care about American troops. Not Russians, Cubans, or Venezuelans.
Where else do you want to go to war? 18 years straight and counting...
Yeah. That and calling Muslims, Amish. Like broken records.
Got Pinochet?
“” “” I thought Putin might becoming reasonable and not want to be enemy with the US.”” “”
LOL. Where have you been for a last few years?
“” “” I think Russia will pull Maduro out of there....and fly him to Russia.”” “”
No way. They already have a collection of such morrons. Yanukovich of Ukraine is just one last example. There is a change of policy starting with Assad of Syria. They aren’t allowed to run anymore and see such a great result. Rinse and repeat.
Have some obscure CIA contractor AIR DROP a few thousand of the AK47s we harvested from the Middle East and a few MILLION ROUNDS of ammo and let these folks go for it just as we did in 1776.
BUT NO AMERICAN BOOTS IN THERE WITHOUT A FORMAL DECLARATION OF WAR BY UNANIMOUS RECORDED VOTE IN CONGRESS!

I agree.
We are in a difficult spot.
LOL
‘The obvious question is what happens next? Do we send marines in to finish the job? Or do we just let this fester?’
I’m with you, we send in the boys, get the job done, and then quickly send them home. It’s our backyard and anyone opposing our attempts to establish freedom there is simply doing the dirty work of Putin and the Leftists in this country. I’m old enough to remember the Cold War and having to deal with Democrats here doing everything possible to help the Soviets take over Central America, so I’m aware of their tactics.
Russia gonna try to keep their pet dictator in power no matter if it kills him and a host of Venezuelans....
You have this exactly right. It is called reciprocity in diplomatic circles. On the visas, to be fair though, the US policy for virtually all countries is reciprocity in pricing. Our base application price is $160.00. If another country charges Americans over $160.00 for a visa, we tack on the difference as an additional fee.
