Bernie Sanders says everyone deserves the right to vote - even if you're in jail

Bernie Sanders reaffirmed his stance on prison voting in an op-ed published Monday by USA Today. The 2020 presidential hopeful and current Vermont senator has vocally supported not just allowing those with prior felony convictions to cast their ballot, but those who are currently incarcerated as well.

"This should not devolve into a debate about whether certain people are 'good enough' to have the right to vote. Voting is not a privilege. It is a right," Sanders wrote.

"In my view, the crooks on Wall Street who caused the great recession of 2008 that hurt millions of Americans are not 'good' people. But they have the right to vote, and it should never be taken away."

"This is not a radical idea. Vermont and Maine allow inmates to vote and more than 30 nations — including Israel, South Africa, and Canada — also understand that voting rights for all citizens is a basic principle of democracy," Sanders wrote.

Of course, because everyone knows that criminals will most likely vote for Democrats. What does that say about them?

Voting is not a privilege. It is a right," Sanders wrote.

Owning guns is a right not a privilege, people in prison should carry guns.

I wonder if he would feel the same way if the inmates voted overwhelmingly conservative?

I heard someone mention that many prison populations are larger than the cities the prisons are in. So if jailbirds get to vote, those cities will be ruled by criminals.

That a party dedicated to crime and criminality knows where to solicit new voters by the prison bus load.

I think we should do a test run on this, first giving the right to vote from prison only to attackers and murderers of politicians.

Well, as a matter of fact, I was stunned when I was informed that felons couldn’t vote. Or have access to guns. What about the old rubric that once you have served your time, your debt to society is paid?

The thing about Bernie is that he’s consistent, albeit in a rigid and doctrinaire way. Whatever he’s thought or said, he keeps saying it, and never seems to learn anything different. This is often interpreted as showing he has character, that he’s principled and consistent.

An alternate interpretation is that he’s a bit nuts and never learns from experience where his deep-seated beliefs are concerned. I remember him being asked about socialisim in Venezuela, and saying something like, “It’s an interesting question, and we can discuss it later.” In other words, socialism didn’t fail, although there may have been implementation problems, which of course he could improve on. Further, Venezuela is heroically battling against outside US interference and economic oppression.

Does that ‘right to vote’ include people in jail for plotting to kill him?

Wish someone would ask him that.

In the beginning....You had to go to a polling place. There was no early voting, no absentee etc etc..AND you had to prove citizenship.

AND....all ballots were in English.
