Secrecy, Self-Dealing, and Greed at the NRA
The Trace ^ | 4-19-19 | Mike Spies

Posted on 04/27/2019 1:24:13 PM PDT by NoLibZone

The organization’s leadership is focused on external threats, but the real crisis is of its own making.

This winter, members of the National Rifle Association — elk hunters in Montana, skeet shooters in upstate New York, concealed-carry enthusiasts in Jacksonville — might have noticed a desperate tone in the organization’s fundraising efforts. In a letter from early March, Wayne LaPierre, the NRA’s top executive, warned that liberal regulators were threatening to destroy the organization. “We’re facing an attack that’s unprecedented not just in the history of the NRA but in the entire history of our country,” he wrote. “The Second Amendment cannot survive without the NRA, and the NRA cannot survive without your help right now.”

LaPierre is right that the NRA is troubled; in recent years, it has run annual deficits of as much as $40 million. It is not unusual for nonprofits to ask prospective donors to help forestall disaster. What is unusual is the extent to which such warnings have become the central activity of the NRA. Even as the association has reduced spending on its avowed core mission — gun education, safety, and training — to less than 10 percent of its total budget, it has substantially increased its spending on messaging. The NRA is now mainly a media company, promoting a lifestyle built around loving guns and hating anyone who might take them away.

It sounds like time for a big shake-up in upper management.

IF they don’t get a handle on this the States could close the NRA.

A runway corp with incompetent board members would be grounds.

"They did it to themselves."

Given the incessant and well-funded attacks on the Second Amendment, what should they have done differently??

If the FUDDS had their way, we would all be shooting single-shot weapons that are stored in a central armory unless signed out.

The NRA is having troubles right now, but keep in mind this article is from "The Trace", the "news" outlet funded by billionaire gun-banner Mike Bloomberg.

Couldn’t have come at a worse time, as gun ownership and 2nd amendment rights are under attack as never before. Now this news that Oliver North is stepping down. I have no idea what’s going on with the NRA - all I know is that they defend gun rights and do it well. I hope they get their act together on management and finances.

“We’re facing an attack that’s unprecedented not just in the history of the NRA but in the entire history of our country,” he wrote.

Typical fundraising letter from all types of organizations. “Donate Now or else!!!” I just got the same messages of emergency from three Catholic magazines.

I trust that NRA is rolling in cash and other groups are doing just fine.

Yeah, a group that is constantly running red ink isn’t in good shape. Even if it turns out there’s nothing shady or illegal going on, that’s just poor management.

Yeah, hasn’t every NRA fundraising letter for the last decade include almost that exact sentence?

I don’t know what issues may exist but making them into a public spectacle is the worst possible thing to do at the worst possible time.

A public fight right now is just pouring gasoline on the fire that libs/dems are using to attack the 2nd amendment. Stength, not infighting is needed when the gun regulators and gun grabbers are on the rise.

they might not be in this state if they hadn't left CT, NY and MA out to dry and with their blatant anti second amendment gun laws a few years ago and not cutting these laws off at the knees, now look where we are

If I may, SOMEBODY had better find out if Wayne really HAS been embezzling money for his personal aggrandizement, and if so, take appropriate action. Will the organization fold if Wayne goes to the slammer? If he’s $200K-worth guilty, should he be punished or let slide? (This sounds like we’re discussing some democRAT governor.) Not good.

$2 million to North and nothing good in return. All should be fired. NRA needs to clean this mess up.

I’m not sure it’s 100% true, but it wouldn’t surprise me. Charitable and position advocacy groups that get too large tend to attract power hungry people and that person or people tend to use the moneys as integrated with their personal power.
