As lieutenant governor, Gavin Newsom supported a 2017 bill increasing the state's gas taxes. When running for governor in 2018, he opposed a ballot initiative that would have repealed that same increase. It's 2019, and Newson, now the state's governor, is demanding an investigation into why the state's gas prices are so high.
On Tuesday, the governor sent a letter to the California Energy Commission (CEC) asking that the state agency investigate the Golden State's roughly $4.03 per gallon gas prices, currently the highest in the country (and well above the national average of $2.86 per gallon)

Like the say, “You can’t make this crap up.”
A dirty secret that the rats in Sacramento never tell us is there is a state sales tax on the gasoline.
The higher the per gallon cost is, more state sales tax is brought in. The counties and cities get a share, so they never bring up this reality.
Gee I thought the Libs did not want oil and natural gas, you know all electric from wind and solar. So what’s the problem! You are getting what you wanted Libs!
Given the mentality of the people who elected them, they will likely get away with this.
They dont need an investigation. Just a mirror.
Take a look at the political leadership in CA. Then ponder this: There is no linguistic expression of cause and effect in Spanish.
Democrats: “We dindu dat!”

Illinois has county, city, and god only knows who else’s taxes on gas. Once these are added to the bill then the state tax is applied. Thus you are paying tax on the tax. Democrats currently run the filthy state and are proposing increases to the whole mess which would make it the highest gas cost of any state...by far.
Maybe another gas tax to fund be study of why prices are so high will help. /s
This site says there is 73.8 cents of taxes AFTER the tanker dumps his load.

Apparently the voters of California know what they want, and deserve to get it...Good and hard...
(hat tip to H L Mencken)
California pols are disingenuous scum who think their voters are complete imbeciles.
Yup, Californians are that stupid, especially the smart ones
Excellent point.
Michigan has that sales tax, too. The state govt. was in a panic when gas was down over a year ago and their government croupier's cut of the money being pulled off the taxation roulette table was going too low. They sighed in relief when gas went up again.
Thanks for the data. California taxes per gallon are outrageous.

Unfortunately, a majority of them are! We travel frequently between the SF Bay Area and Northern Nevada where we have a “second home.” Gas prices in Douglas County, Nevada (which abuts California abeam of South Lake Tahoe), the last time we were there a week ago, were $2.86. In February, they were $2.19. The price difference is ALL CA taxes and other subventions because all the fuel sold there comes from CA refineries, and I doubt they run non-RFG for Nevada consumption.
CA voter: Geez, there oughta be a law against these high gas prices. By the way, where is the polling place I can go to so I can vote Democrat again? Oh, thanks.
Thanks for posting this. California has done the same thing for decades:
“Illinois has county, city, and god only knows who elses taxes on gas. Once these are added to the bill then the state tax is applied. Thus you are paying tax on the tax. Democrats currently run the filthy state and are proposing increases to the whole mess which would make it the highest gas cost of any state...by far.”
In spite of these outrageous gas taxes, California streets, roads and highways have gone hell in a hand basket to pay for the illegals in our sanctuary state in the past decade plus.
