A 37-year-old man from New Jersey was arrested after attempting to enter St Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan with two gasoline cans Wednesday night, police say.
Church ushers stopped the man at about 8 p.m. and notified nearby officers with the NYPD Critical Response Command, who took him into custody.
Authorities say he drove to St. Patrick's, parked in front of Saks and took two gas cans and lighter fluid from the car into the cathedral where he was stopped.
The man's intentions were not immediately clear. The incident came two days after the fire at Notre Dame cathedral in Paris.

Lol. And he obviously thought he’d need lighter fluid to get gas to burn ;-)
Aw come on! He was just planning on toasting marshmallows, or making some S'mores.
Yes, it is certainly a mystery.
WHO would write such idiotic crap?
Whatever happened to "If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck..." common sense in this world. Are all "journalists" taught to be so stupid?
And after checking, police report his car was NOT out of gas.
This is the kind of stupidity that must be permanently eliminated... With prejudice!
I was wondering about that.
Would leaving a trail of lighter fuel back to your gasoline soaked area be safer than leaving a trail of gas? I can’t imagine it burns at that much of a slower speed to make any difference. A lot easier though to pour out a trail of lighter fluid than using what remains in the gas can.
Given enough time I could probably figure out 100 ways to light it more safely.
The can of lighter fluid is like a fuse trail allowing him to get clear of the expanding gasoline fumes ... at the generator he was servicing?
They said he walked in with two cans of gas and the lighter fluid. I think I know what his intentions were.
“Hey - anybody gotta light?”
If he was white, they would report what his intentions were. He must have been muslim, since they cant figure out what his intentions were. The Left has a severe case of spiritual blindness.
his intentions weren’t clear? well, we can rule out:
1) he was there to clean car parts
2) he thought the church was a gas station
3) he was making a fuel donation to the parish auto fleet
But no name and no photo of the perp.
And - for those who did not watch the video....
The on scene local reporter referred to the "accidental fire at Notre Dame," and he conspicuously stressed the word "accidental."
Someone tried to do something...
The man is known to police. They are working harder than they should.
he had two big cans of gas. One small can of lighter fluid. The small can of lighter fluid would be easier to handle/ control flow held away from body, when pouring (squirting) out a fuse trail. As opposed to a bulky gas can with a large flow opening. (just guessing)
Covering in the media for terrorists is aiding and abetting.
“The man’s intentions were not immediately clear”? Who writes this stuff??? Oh....wait...he was gonna light a candle or two...
Was his name mo hammed?
He was just making sure a construction accident happened. 8>)
They know hi name, they just cannot tell you, because you are racist.
