It may not be the biggest state, nor the one with the most students, but Illinois leads the nation in school district spending on administrators. Even amid a looming statewide financial crisis, the states 852 districts spent more than $1 billion in fiscal year 2016, the most in the nation
...
Illinois also spends twice as much per pupil on school administration as the national average $544 in Illinois to $226 nationwide. Measured per pupil, that is the third highest rate in the country, nearly double New York at $349 and nearly five times as much as California, where admin costs are $95 per student.
Not only do most districts spend a lot on administration, Illinois has 852 districts, more than many other states. About one-quarter of those districts operate only one school. Roughly 4 percent serve fewer than 100 students.
...
Metropolitan Planning Council .. suggests that districts share administrative services and even superintendents, based on geographic proximity and the needs of students.
Thats already happening in some places. Most recently, the town of Paw Paw in western Illinois voted to deactive its school district. Its 50 students will stay in their schools, but will be educated by another, neighboring district.
Illinois administrative spending per student has risen 5 percent since 2014-15, when the policy group pegged it at at $518 per student. At that time, Illinois overall statewide spending on administrative costs was still more than $1 billion.
The comparatively high administrative costs strains school budget. Education advocates hope to move more money move into classrooms.

Its interesting watching my home State swirl the drain.
Scary, but interesting.
2 years.....
L
990 million in grafitti removal
10 million on education
School Quality = Number of non-NEA teachers divided by (1+Number of NEA Educators + Administrators + all diversity trolls).
Had to put that 1 in there to avoid blowing things up in the unthinkable situation where we eliminate all the undesirables described in the denominator.)
I have a strong suspicion that if a thorough audit were done of every dollar, and where it ended up, you’d find a lot of shenanigans. Sorta like that scholarship they started so they could launder the money to all the families of Clinton, Obama, and DNC staffers, these admin budgets seem like a good place to hide the flow of $$$ to people who need political perks.
Wasn’t it in Chicago where they had a huge scandal where the schools were in awful shape but the school district offices were gleaming showcases?
If we can educate just one child by firing all the administrators, it would be worth it.
We could ask why so many administrative employees are needed in the first place.
Of course school districts need back office people, administrators, accountants, maintenance personnel, etc. But it would be interesting to see if their numbers have increased in recent years. And also, if they are getting sizeable pay and benefit packages.
Lobbyist's one day as Illinois substitute teacher entitles him to pension, court rules
They must certainly have the smartest, best educated students ever!
oh wait. Never mind.
Agreed. I would like to see the growth going back 30 years.
How many of these employees are relatives of politicians and somehow “work” from home?
and then there’s all those cushy pensions
“The comparatively high administrative costs strains school budget.”
F the school budget! Do you know what is does to my household budget via the real estate tax? Minus the schools, my tax bill is perfectly reasonable...no complaints. But throw that teachers union/administrative bloat in then it’s disgraceful and robbery.
Administrative positions at K-12 government schools increased by 700 percent since 1950 seven times faster than the growth of student enrollment.
Look for the Union label.
Tell us more about laundering funds to provide scholarships for Rat politicians kids.
Public schools are a racket, even in relatively low-tax Florida.
I pity you poor people in IL.
And proud that their kids are at a third grade reading level in the 12th grade
The most corruption money can buy.
