A French journalist reports the art and sacred relics inside Paris Notre Dame Cathedral have been saved as a massive fire rips through the more than 800-year-old church Monday evening.
Good news, Paris Match reporter Nicolas Delesalle began. All the works of art were saved. Delesalle, citing Father Frédéric, said the Crown of Thorns [pictured, above, during a ceremony in 2017], believed to be the wreath of thorns that was placed on the head of Jesus Christ at his crucifixion, was one of the priceless relics recovered from the blaze.
At the time of publication, there had been no official confirmation of the treasures being saved. The Associated Press reported the effort to retrieve the piece was ongoing, citing French sources, that emergency services were trying to salvage the famed art pieces stored in the cathedral.
Crowds of stunned Parisians and tourists some crying, others offering prayers watched on in horror in central Paris on Monday evening as flames engulfed the Notre-Dame cathedral.
Gasps and cries of Oh my god erupted at 7:50 pm when the top portion of the churchs spire came crashing down into an inferno that has spread to the entire roof.
More gasps came a few seconds later when the rest of the spire collapsed, caught on the cameras of thousands of mobile phones.

The church also spent a lot of time trying to not recognize the miracle of Lourdes. The church is not infallible. One has only to look at the current Pope. Compare him to Jean Paul II and draw your own conclusions.
Do you believe it is the actual crown of thorns from Christs crucifixion?
What actual harm is done if it isn’t the true crown of thorns?
Its acquisition was centuries ago and those who choose to believe should be permitted to do so without being subjected to ridicule by those who know nothing on the subject.
The church doesn’t have to “prove” anything. The crown is not for sale so no harm can be done by the claim it is the true crown. Those who don’t believe are welcome to their opinion.
God forbid they would have to prove a claim
Believing something not true and imbuing supernatural or reverential properties on inanimate objects is not exactly benign.
I agree that it’s not the worst thing in the world and can even have positive long term benefits in some cases. God can use anything, including folly.
But superstitious irrationality is not Christian nor fully benign.
It definitely detracts from the real relationships all believers have with Christ, which is one aspect of what harm there is does arise.
To begin with, I was not TAUGHT to value the relic. I am not Catholic though I do respect most Catholic teachings with regard to the Bible. I am a Protestant but hold my beliefs to myself most of the time.
You may spend your time making an argument as to how to calculate the odds, but I won’t bother with such nonsense. Obviously, there are “doubting Thomases” still around in abundance.
In certain cultures the AGE of a person merits respect. Unfortunately you whippersnappers who know nothing about life seem to think age is a handicap.
Obviously your level of learning tends towards children’s stories.
I find your caustic comments about Santa totally despicable. Many cultures share similar figures as Santa, St. Nicolas, etc. Keeping children “in line” may be your objective, but it is certainly lacking in warmth and goodness.
No, I have not. My familiarity with Notre Dame and the Sainte Chapelle stems from the fact I lived for three years close to Place St. Michel, a very short distance from both. I climbed to the top of the bell tower and sat on the roof of Notre Dame. I have a picture taken by a friend of mine standing with my head under the bell next to the clapper. I’ve often said the most beautiful view of Paris is not from the Eiffel Tower, but from the top of Notre Dame. Late in the afternoon, the Seine appears to be a river of gold when the sun is shining.
Frankly, I believe the Shroud of Turin is authentic. (and I am not Catholic.)
Just what is superstitious irrationality? What is faith for some is superstition to others. What is rational to some is irrational to others. The entire principal of Freedom is based on the ability to choose one’s path for oneself, and not to be forced into a common belief by all. That is pure communism and we know how that has failed, over and over again.
Faith is indeed believing in something without incontrovertible proof. It is also the basis of the Muslim religion. They believe that ALL who do not believe as they do must be killed.
AHHhhh
The perks of being the One, True Church!
What about the stuff Rome teaches that AIN'T in the bible?
Wait 'til I get on Rome's invented Mary.
The harm is it takes the focus off of Christ and puts it on a relic. Worse the veneration of such relics is idolatry. Even if the artifact is genuine (and thats a BIG of) Why would one worship or venerate a crown of thorns when one can worship and have fellowship with the One who wore the crown?
Sounds wonderful.
AHHhhh

.
YOUR words, not mine!
How about those who say God doesn’t exist? Do THEY have to prove it?
