Notre Dame cathedral has caught fire, according to the Parisian fire service and eyewitnesses.
Footage posted online shows a large fire engulfing the upper part of the cathedral, with the flames licking around its two bell towers.
A major operation was under way, the fire department added, while a city hall spokesman said on Twitter that the area was being cleared.
Officials in Paris said the fire could be linked to renovation works being carried out at the cathedral.
It comes after France's Saint Sulpice church , used in the filming of Dan Brown’s ‘Da Vinci Code’ thriller, caught fire in March.

Oh man. I saw stuff you wouldn’t believe as a kid. When that gasoline goes , it vaporized in the air and explodes in the air into a fireball. It isn’t just the liquid gasoline. It goes off like a bomb. I saw a car completely melted in 30 seconds. I am convinced this was arson beyond any doubt. The fire security and clean up was protocol and security inspected twice. There is no doubt this was yet another muslim attack on Christian Churches in France. There are witnesses. Why are they not allowed to talk?

It couldn’t have spread that fast without accelerants. They actually renovated a lot of this several years ago (I contributed to it and then the last few times I have been in Paris and gone to Notre Dame, I would hear the guides pointing this out to people).
The French government will never admit it, but it was terrorism and while it was planned for the start of Holy Week, it wasn’t directed only at Christians but at all of Western civilization. Notre Dame was symbolic of this, and if you studied art and art history, as I did, you’d know that this is definitely in the 9/11 category in terms of striking at a symbol.
There has been a wave of moslem vandalism of churches all over France recently.
Funny how Sheppard Smith and Neil Cavuto can blame the renovators without any proof! I guess the renovators haven’t yet threatened Fox News into submission.
